Contender barrel dovetail repair
« on: January 22, 2004, 07:03:33 AM »
I have a carbine barrel that the dovetail to hold on the forearm is worn. It keeps the forearm on but I definately would not put a sliong on the forearm.  My gunsmith put some red super glue stuff on it but I would like a more permanate cheaper repair. Any ideas? Don't want to invest much as I'm going to sell the barrel , sold the carbine with my .30-30 barrel yesterday.

Thanks, Dan

It is probably not worn so much as just being stretched from over tightening the screw.  This is a common problem, and I suspect the reason the Encore uses a different approach.  I've had pretty good luck with just peening the dovetail slot down around the dovetail using a light hammer and a punch.  While not pretty, and probably not satisfying for the purists out there, it is hidden by the forearm, and it works.  It works even better if you use some super glue and don't tighten the screw so much next time.

You could silver solder it in place but it would pretty much make it permanent.

I have had this happen a couple of times.  Call T/C and they will send you new ones free.  Both times I did this they pressed in tight and stayed put.

I don't know why the factory doesn't go ahead and silver solder them on (preferably centered) in the first place.  I can see no reason why they shouldn't be permanent.

While I am at it, the threaded female portion should deeper AND have an integral bottom so that the screw cannot bottom on the bbl itself and leverage the dovetail out if someone gets overzealous with the screwdriver.

With the really hard recoiling ctgs, this is an area of weakness which shows up first in my experience.  A hard kicker wants to tear its own forend dovetails out.
