« on: January 22, 2004, 04:17:29 PM »
I don't want to open the yellow pages & look for a gunsmith who re-blues
Someone left me an old Savage 99 & would like to put in back in shape. I can do the stock but need a re-blue job..any suggestions?
Thanks

outdoor,
A word to the wise.......Please! An old Savage 99 will lose considerable value IF you were to reblue.  The reason is that a true rust-bluing is in fact a rusting process that requires that the Smith heavily buff off the oxide created while rebluing.  This is evident in the stamped lettering on the receiver and barrel (it smears out the sharp edges of the lettering).  If you value your '99 then keep it as is and enjoy the story it tells.  Finally, if the lever has lost some or all of its characterist case-hardened finish....do not blue it.  Some gunsmiths can do the proper case hardening finish in a furnace.  If you need to touchup the bluing consider using ColdBluing to do limited areas.

Thanks Savage..
I use to own a gun shop so I understand values very well. This one has considerable blue damage..Looks like someone used a chemical to remove some of the blue! You can see the pour marks from what ever they used. Never seen this before. Thats why I wanted to reblue.
Thanks

Sounds appropriate for this instance.  If you are willing to ask I can suggest going over to <24 hourcampfire.com/Savage Collectors>  They can lead you to a good rebluing service.  Do you have any idea what model 99 you have and Date of Mfg.?
