winchester or marlin 1894's
« on: January 10, 2004, 04:21:35 PM »
Maybe somebody could clear this up for me. I know J. Browning designed the winchester 1894. So is the marlin 1894 basically the same rifle with just a different type of breech bolt or what. Also I have been wanting to get a lever rifle/pistol combo and thanks to jd45 Im going with 45LC he gave me some great info, anywho Ive allways have had winchester 94's  but lately Ive been looking at the 92 type action. Rossi has the puma and navy arms has took over them. So are their any others out their that make the 92 action that might compare with them or does anyone have any advise, comlaint or grips between the two actions                                 THANKS IN ADVANCE

Browning had nothing to do with the design of Marlin firearms.  Marlin's 94 is a pistol cartridge length action like a '92 Winchester but it's own unique design.

The Win 94 was designed for a longer cartridge and feeding is somewhat hit and miss.  This 94 also has somewhat of a double jointed type action which has a tendency to pull the butt down off your shoulder when operated.  For a pistol length shell I believe you will prefer either the Marlin or the Rossi over the Winchester 94.  Also check the Rossi's through Legacy Sports.  The Rossi's have variation in fit and finish but a good reputation for function.  Some limited production Winchersters 92's (very nice, from Japan) are still available around the country for now.

Cowboy shooters prefer the marlins for speed and reliability. The Win (Rossi) 1892 design is a stronger action if you want to hot rod the 45 Colt. The Win 1894 was re-engeneered to handle the pistol cartridges because of cowboy action shooting, instead of reviving the exellent 1892 design. Moses (John Moses Browning) was a great designer, but had nothing to do with any Marlin.

I have a Winchester 94 rifle and a Winchester 92 carbine in .45LC. Have not shot a Marlin but, both winchester's shoot point of aim right out of the box and have had no problems with them.

My Marlin 1894C 357 is a blast to shoot and feeds anything I put in it.  It is also a great deer brush gun when loaded with 158gr XTPfps and 18gr of Lil'gun.  Best blood trail I ever saw.
