First Big Cannon
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:32:08 PM »
I know it is not that big but compared to what i have had it is huge. It weighs 66.6Lbs and is 17inches long the bore is a sleeved .125 thick and 1inch diameter and 12 inches deep and clean and shiny and the trunnions are 2 inches around and the muzzle is 5 inches in diameter and vent to the cascabel distance is 3 inches. I can find no makers mark just wondering if you guys think it was made to fire projectiles or just salute? The guy’s estate sale i got it from was a big gun a cannon guy I also got a cva ironside replica new in the box never opened the big cannon was $35 and the CVA was $15 I think I did ok.
Thanks For all your help
Kyle

Welcome to the board.  You did very well!

What caliber is the CVA Old Ironsides?  If it is .69 they sell for over $250 retail. The smaller ones are less but still around 10x what you paid. Great find.

As for the other, someone here will recognize it. If it is cast around a sleeve and in good shape, you did very well on that one too.

What else was at the sale?  Sounds like you could walk in with $500 cash and walk out with $5000 worth of goodies.

;D I'd say you did very well indeed! And again, to paraphrase Mike H., Welcome to the Board! BoomLover

Hi There  Your BIG cannon is somebodies creation of a Rev _War Daniel King howitzer, if you Google "King Howitzer" you will find out much more than my two finger typing will allow! There were two types yours looks like the second variety Its a close copy but not exact. It has the notes but not the music!

Good buys there, congratulations.  Should be fun making a carriage for you howitzer and at that size the wheels won't cost you an arm or leg either.

Yeah, you made out like a bandit! I concur with exlimey's judgement, it's a second model D. King Howitzer. Here's a post from a forum member that'll give you some ideas for a carriage; keep in mind that it's not known exactly what their carriages looked like.

We just scaled down a Howitzer carrage from Mullers Book on Artillery. For Our 2nd Model King Howitzer.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

The CVA is the .440 size cannon but this guy had it all reloading supplies all kinds of AR stuff, gun cases, gun safes this guy was a mans  man.  There are rumors that in a few weeks his entire gun collection will be put up for sale I was also told he had a bunch of gun parts. I think the only reason someone else hadn’t bought it yet is because it was under a table next to some black ductile iron tees and 90s and it was set up on the muzzle and looked like a fire hydrant. I missed it twice but I went back a third time to make an offer on a dresser and took my daughter with me and she want to back in the room where I found it and I saw it because I was looking down at her. What do you guys think the value of the King Howitzer it is a straight bore no changes in diameter in the bore I hadn’t noted that previously.

Thanks

Kyle
