Ithaca 37 ejecting problem

had this Ithac since 1977 or so....have a 24 inch deerslayer barrel for it....when I shoot remmington 2 3/4 1 oz sluggers the gun jams and is very hard to get action open....light loads...no problem.....chamber is clean.......whats wrong???.......thanks Mack

I would try another 1oz slug load, to determine it the problem lies with the gun or the ammo.

I've got a Deerslayer that I've had since '76. The Federals and Remingtons don't get stuck in the chamber but are tight when shucking the slide. Winchesters are what my gun shoots best and even they are a little tight. I think it's something to do with the high brassed shells. Buckshot and HiVelocity loads do the same thing. Not stuck, but kinda tight if ya don't shuck them out quickly. Low brassed shells have never been a problem.
 I'd first try a chamber brush to make sure it was squeaky clean. Mine seems to get really dirty when shooting slugs. If that doesn't work, you may try polishing it some with some steel wool and a hand drill.

Not that I'm recommending you do this, but you could use an automotive brake cylinder hone in the chamber. Not to open it up but more to polish it.
My Ithaca came with a 20" Deerslayer barrel that never shot worth a durn. I took a 28" modified barrel and cut 2" off it (to the second rib support), now it throws Federal Forster slugs into 5" at 75 yards.

The best method to polish a chamber is to wrap steel wool around a mop and spin the rod with a drill motor. I've said before the 37's have a problem with rusty chmabers. Polish the daylights out of it and a little WD40 will help. Remember the 37 becausae of it's action design has very weak pre-extraction camming action, just too nuch going on with a single action of the pump handle..
