Barrel twist rates
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:37:45 PM »
I bought a used (very little) .308 bull barrel handi rifle with camo stock.
I read the chart for .308 -1/10. I had called CS and they told me 1/12. I only have a plastic jag and was not able to check it myself. I tried from the patch so tight it would not hardly move to so loose it fell off and everything in between.

I  had bought a .223 stainless a few years ago, called CS and was told 1/9 twist. When I called on the .308 I again asked on the .223 and was told 1/12. Both numbers show on the list.

I am going to buy some brass jags and try to check the twist rate (again) on both.

Anybody have any insight on the .308?

Call 3 times and take the best 2 out of 3 unless you get three differant answers...then call 2 more times and take the average. Never heard of a 1-12. But you don't know till ya check for yourself. ;D  Kurt

From the FAQ:
Quote
Current production .223 Rem barrels are being made by Marlin with a 1:9" right-hand twist, lands are .219"-.221" and groove is .2240"-.2255". Right now they still have some 1:12" Superlight barrels. (as of 7-5-2007)

FWIW, trials by Springfield Armory, back in the development for the 30-06, determined that the 1:12 was the more accurate twist for a .30cal., but the military wanted a twist that would still stabilize the 220gr. bullet, thus the 1:10. Then they ultimately ended up using a lighter than 220 gr. bullet............
I expect yours to be 1:10, but if it was 1:12 I would be perfectly happy were it mine.
