question on different weight bullets .243
« on: October 25, 2011, 02:28:24 PM »
hello all very nice site you have hear and i really like all the info on the handi thats on hear. but to my question i just got my second handi its a .243 i sold my other 450 marlin handi. a couple years ago. but i am wanting to try some lighter bullets all i can find around hear is 80 and 100 grain. local store said he would order what ever i wanted so i thought id ask if anyone had tryed the 58grain hornady in there handi. mine seems to shoot the 100 and 80 very good at about 60yds or so it will cut 4 out of 5 bullet holes in a 5 shot group with either bullets just the 80 shoots about 3" higher then the 100. so i am very happy with the way it shoots. cant wait to get me another barrell i really wish i would have known that i could get other barrells for my other handi i had. traded it for a contender  >:(  twice the price for in my opinion no were near twice the gun

WELCOME!!

Way back I sold the Contenders and replaced them with handis... One of the BEST thing I ever did!!

Sorry, I haven't tried the ultra lightweight 243 bullets... I have shot the 70Gr Nosler Ballistic Tips with good success..

I shoot the 58 gr Hornady in 24 cal. but mine is a 6mm/223 they shoot very well. They tend to be more accurate at higher volocities

80gr is as light as I've shot in one of my 243 Ultras, but Mitchell's shoots the 55gr BSTs real well in his Ultra Varmint!

Are you just shooting paper? If yes,the bullet weight doesn't matter.

no i wont be shooting paper i plan on deer hunting with the heavier 100gr and coyote, turkey and what ever other small critters i can pick off with the lighter bullets if it shoots both well i was thinking of ordering me another barrel putting a really nice varmit scope on it and breaking out the reloader and reloading with both heavy and light bullets. i was going to get a .223 or 22-250 barrel for it but after looking at the balistics of the .243 in 58gr its alot better then i had thought it was so i figured i would just get it instead and only have one caliber to buy dies and brass for.

Most likey the light and heavy bullets are going to shoot to quite different places, but if your scope is repeatable, you can take notes and adjust it back & forth for each, and just verify -0- with a few shots.

Two possibilities:
Get a second scope complete with rings that is set up for the "other" type of hunting you do.

Pick one bullet that does both. Give the Sierra 85 gr HP a try

Wow, that's a neat idea using a second scope for the other bullets!  Why hadn't I thought of that!  I have a couple of situations that I could use that in.  Thanks Scatterbrain, you are certainly NOT!  (scatterbrained that is)  44 Man

You may need(probably) to shot a couple of rounds after switching depending if minute of deer is good enough or not to make sure. ;)

Ive dropped several scopes with the traditional Weaver mounts and popped them back on with a surprising return of -0-, only a smidge of windage was ever needed and that not even really necessary compared to using open sights in a hunting rifle. We all take extra shots anyway, dont we, just for fun  ;D .
If you are a couple of inches high at 100yd. for your long range varmint load, it might be about dead on with the heavier/slower deer load, so really no adjustment needed?

that would work with the other scope never thought of it. i do know that goin from the 100gr to the 80 would just be drop the clicks a few because it groups perfect just about 2-3" high and dead center but for the cost could be easyier just to buy another barrell for th 100 bucks and scope it and just swap barrels and go

In my experience that clicking up and down usually ends up causing a missed shot at worst or a lot of extra trips to the Range.

Now I don't have any of those $1000 scopes with the outside knobs. Perhaps with those there wouldn't be a problem.

Having two barrels with the scope all set up would probably work as well.

BTW in that case you could also pick a different cartridge for the larger game and use the .243 strictly as a Varminter.
