45-70 Shorty Weight
« on: October 30, 2011, 03:39:40 AM »
Has anyone weighed their 45-70 Handis with shortened barrels? There is a 45-70 Handi in a local gun store that's got me thinking about a shorty project. I'm wondering how much weight savings you get from cutting the barrel down to 16"?

You save about 6 or 8 ounces.  It isn't worthwhile to do to save weight.  Mine has an 18 inch barrel, I did it to save space.  The box blinds over the food plots we hunt over in Alabama are all about 4ftX4ft.  A long barrelled rifle is a nightmare to get turned around to a different opening off of the side, in case a deer does what deer do and comes in from a different way than you expected.  I can lay the shorty across my lap and just poke it out in the direction I need to.  Knock on wood, I've never banged against the side of the stand either.  It points better than full length, handles easier in tight spots, and will fit in a shorter gun case, but the weight saving isn't there.
