Buttstock/forearm - ease of replacement
« on: October 20, 2011, 06:11:15 PM »
Hello folks,

First off, let me say thanks for the wealth of information collected on this forum. I've learned a lot from perusing through the FAQs.

I've just ordered my second H&R rifle - a .45-70 Trapper with 18.75" barrel. I previously owned a Buffalo Classic, which I had sold at one point awhile back to make ends meet. I would like to eventually replace the stock and forearm with a BC stock and forearm. I really liked the wood style on the BC, and I think the longer forearm might look pretty neat on the shorter barrelled trapper.

My question is (and forgive me if this is covered in the FAQs and I just overlooked it) - should forearms and stocks be "drop-in" interchangeable between SB2 receivers, or would a bit of fitting most likely be required? If there is fitting required, could someone direct me to some already-existing literature on the matter?

Thank you,
Tallinar

All mine have swapped without a hitch. I know there are some pics from the past of shorties with the longer BC type forestock and it aint quite a mannlicher, but some get close.
BTW, if you wanted a more 'proportioned look, the forestock of the .45Colt CR carbine is the std. forestock length and the same look; and if you want walnut with a pistol grip and recoil pad look at the Topper Deluxe Classic stocks.

WELCOME Tallinar!

(Where are your manors guys! ;) )

The guys are correct, there should  and usually is NO fitting required. I say it this was because occasionally there is some forend fitting to be done and this is covered in the FAQ's. But it is usually for accuracy more then bolt together "fit".

Good luck,
 CW

Hi and welcome.  It should take you all of 5 -10 minutes to change it out.

Here's a pic of my 18 inch .38-55 on BC Carbine stock set.

I suppose I have a followup question to this then. I notice from the FAQs that there were some prices posted for the BC stock/forearm that were current as of early last year. Can these be ordered directly from H&R? I'm having trouble locating this information on their website.

I noticed Brownell's seems to have listed the BC forearm for sale, but they don't specify if it includes the spacer, and they don't have a picture, so I'm not sure if it's the full BClassic forearm, or the BCarbine. The manufacturer part number listed on their site doesn't match any of the part numbers I found in the FAQ. They list 9 inch length though, so I take it they are referring to the carbine forearm.

In the meantime, I guess I'll keep my eyes open on the H&R Classifieds here.

Thanks again folks.

You could PM Brian56 with your questions of stock on a particular item.  You can also call CS at H&R and they will let you order if it's available.  ;)
