Phew!!!
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:13:32 AM »
I carelessly drifted out all the pins of my 5-day-old Handi last night so I could take it apart to lighten the trigger! I got it back together this morning, but it was a little nerve-racking seeing all those loose parts sitting there :P . The links in the FAQ (trigger work) were definitely the only reason I was able to get it back together, heh. This isn't the first time I've done something like this with a new gun, though, and it is definitely the way to learn your equipment!

I didn't go crazy with it, but I got it from probably 6lbs down to closer to 4lbs. The trigger is probably one of the crispest I've ever felt, though it was also the heaviest SA trigger I've ever felt, heh. I mean, I don't think I'd ever even owned a shotgun with a trigger that heavy :P . But, now it is definitely better and I think my accuracy will definitely improve because of it. Next time out, (probably rounds 20-40 in the gun), I want to be able to ring the 6" gong at 200 yards 5 / 5 times. I did hit it my last two shots (shots 19 and 20 out of the gun) during my sight-in trip. But, the trigger was so heavy that I kept finding myself trying to steady the reticle while thinking "man, I wish this trigger would hurry up and break...geez this trigger is heavy...what in the world is taking it so lo--BLAM!" :P

But, I'm just taking it one step at a time regarding accuracy. I don't know if I'll ever really go for MOA groups or anything, as I prefer more macroscopic challenges (I'd rather shoot a 12" steel gong at 250 yards than try to shoot 1" groups at 100). But, I do intend to continually increase the challenges as I improve--maybe one day try for coke cans or clay pidgeons at 200 yards :) .

I was going to try to take it out today but I ended up planning a date instead, heh. So, maybe I'll get out in the next few days and see what I come up with.
*edit*
Oh, it started life as a .308 Survivor. I replaced the stock for the shorter and adjustable OAL, and chopped the barrel to ~16.4" for the same reason.

Personally, I think I'd rather be whipped than take one of these apart.  I always have trouble getting everything back in.  Ham handedness with not so good eyesight are contributing factors.   I just did the trigger on my 30-30, took me two hours getting it back together.  I ended up with a pull of about five pounds, good enough for what I'll be doing with the rifle.  I'm also trying to get mine to shoot better, so far I'm lucky to get under four inches @100.

Anytime I have taken anything apart to work on it, my thoughts have always run to "Why did they put all the extra parts in here??" :P   Seems cheaper for me to take things in for work than pay someone to fix my screw-ups.  I did however ream 357 barrels to 357 Max after watching the first one get done. 8)   Felt pretty bullet-proof after that. ;D   DP

After about 5 or 6 you won't even need the schematic anymore!

Best part of disassembling a receiver is that you always acquire a couple of extra parts for the next project. ::)

Hahaha. Nah I'm definitely glad I did it. I like knowing my firearms. I actually probably became most intimate with my .44mag Raging Bull--I could take that apart down to the last spring and pin and probably put it back together with my eyes closed :P . (At least I like to think so, hah).
No extra parts, though! That's not uncommon for me though :P .

*edit*
I want to clarify that I did read the FAQs before the attempt. Apparently, though, I got kindof confused as to how exactly it was supposed to be done. I pushed out one pin too many and forgot to use the slave pins during disassembly and had parts rattling out all over the place :P . But yeah, it will be way easier the second time (well, I still need to make a jig to help get those pins out... what a PITA).

I wasnt never lost, just a mite confused for a while..................
But really, these are a simple action, and if they were done with screws, rather than pins, I would like them better (aint gonna happen). I can throw a towel across my lap and knock one down, mess with it and reassemble pretty quick, but Ive always been lucky (except for when I wasnt).

Wow, the trigger job made a huge difference! I actually had a "negligent discharge" today at the range on my first shot. I sighted through the scope and started my squeeze as I was bringing the crosshairs on target, and BLAM--missed by 3 feet. But hey, I can't complain!
I didn't shoot very well today. We got a lot of rain over the weekend and the wet ground meant no dust when I missed. So, I had no idea in which direction I was missing until the 17th shot when another shooter was spotting me through his rifle's scope. Turns out my scope was like 2' high at 200 yards, and I got it close by the last shot. The .308 might have busted that $30 scope :P . In any case, it was still a joy to shoot even though I was literally blasting away into the hillside. Makes me wonder if I'm tempting Handiholism :P .
