And another Failure to Fire
« on: October 01, 2011, 07:52:38 PM »
My 45/70 Ultra has had FTF problems since I purchased it, second hand.  Checked the firing pin protrusion and it was about .042, refaced the hammer and have it at about .052.  Still having FTF's, however; the funny thing is if I snatch the trigger it will fire the first time.  If pull the trigger (with proper follow thru) it will misfire.

Does this sound like a weak hammer spring, or do you think the transfer bar is dropping out for some reason? What would be your next course of action?

Thanks,
Bobby

Sounds like the t-bar and/or the trigger extension, mine did the same thing when I bought it new, but it was due to a deep rim cut since shimming the extractor cured it, maybe was exacerbated by the t-bar tho.

Tim,

Rim cut looks ok, haven't miked it, but have had enough problems with rim cut that I can usually tell.  Would H&R repair it? (Replace the T-bar)  I'm sure this is a factory problem, probably why the guy sold it so cheap ($250 for an Stainless Ultra with T-hole stocks)

My issues came with my SS UH 45-70 too, I think these were in the batch with the too short Striker portion of the T-Bar. See my detail recently resurrected post on it and Slackdaddy's (see his FTF after lightening trigger, in the H&R Shotguns forum PICS too!) issues and you will probably recognize yours. You can probably fix it with the better T-bar and not mess with trying to lengthen the Trigger Extension.

Yes, H&R will fix it if you want to send it in for repair, FWIW, I just checked mine, it has the short blocky t-bar striker too, bottom in the pic.

Can I purchase the parts (T-bar) from H&R or Brownells' if I want to make the repair myself?

Replaced hammer, spring, transfer bar, & trigger with new parts from H&R.  Lubed with a little Super Lube/Moly powder mix.

Results are: Nice deep primer strikes, not even a hint of a misfire.  Problem Solved!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Brian, from Bobby

I to am having ftf  with my 45-70 BC.  It shot fine when I first got it but after 60 rounds  it started where I had to strike each round twice to fire. Today I went to da range and it ftf even tried to strike each round 2 or 3 times.Just a small dent on primer

'Dollars to donuts' its the T-bar; check it against the recent pics, especially in place at the F-pin. The top of the T-bar 'srtiker' should be above the top of the Firing pin.

The T-bar on my BC is the short one. How and where can I buy a new one.

Talked to H&R today about ftf issue on my BC. They are emailing me a prepaid shipping label they are going to fix the ftf problem and put a new barrel on it because the dovetail was cut at a angle. :)
