Ive been saying all along, a 2245 fps round is gonna be mean tough on a barrel.  I cant expect a good barrel life from one of them.  Ture I dont varmint hunt, but does this round really fill a gap that a current round cant?

Nope, it was a cover article of the new Shooting Times.  The guy (I want to say Rick Jamison) tested a new Ruger M77 in 204.  The cover states plain as day 2245 fps
Like I said, this is gonna be a barrel eater  :-D

Ok NewHampshire,
I found out the truth. As I suspected, it is a typo, even if you don't relize it.  I couldn't imagine 2245 fps eating a barrel. But I can see 4225 fps doing it in a big case with small bullet. But with a .223 rem sized case it shouldn't be a problem , as Ruger's website state's.

I just read that article.  It says that Hornady is using a special mix of powder in that round to get that velocity and that it will not be attainable by the handloader.  It did not say how much less it would be.  That all spells too expensive for my blood.

Well, I see Midsouth has the Hornady ammo for $11.73 a box of 20, and Encore and contender barrels will be available in March from them as well. If I wasn't so darn broke right now, I might buy a barrel for my Encore. Maybe I will this time next year.

I tried to push the small 45 grain hornet bullets at 4,000 fps in my 22/250 but never seemed to get acceptable accuracy. I can only wonder what Ruger is doing to accomplish 4,245 fps and maintain accuracy too. I felt that the bullets were coming apart at this speed since the holes in the target were strangely shaped. It didn't keyhole but left a ragged hole in the target. I might eventually break down and buy one in a bolt laminate but I doubt it. My 22/250 does all I ask of it and from my favorite platform, a T/C!
