Update " I am a little gun shy"
« on: September 03, 2011, 04:44:36 AM »
Healing, mentally and physically. Only reload pistol cartridges. I don't own any hi-power rifles anymore. Got a digital scale and weigh each round after finishing. Use only published data. One load for the 45 LC and one for the 45 ACP. Only factory ammo for the 223. The long colt is a 300g GC cast over w296 the ACP is w231 over a 230g cast. The 410 Tammer gets factory as does the 12G. Thats all I have now. Lost the index finger and damaged the thumb joint, No grip. Fine for the auto and rifles but no wheel guns. I have to shoot them lefty. Still check the forum twice a day.

George,

Glad you are getting better and still able to use your firearms.  From the looks of your 270 Win I think you are very lucky to still be able to visit GBO twice a day.

Take care.

Thanks for posting the picture of the aftermath George. I'd say God may have blessed you just a wee tad bit with only the loss of the finger and use of the thumb.
I already made a copy of the photo of your hand and have it hanging in front of my reload bench and this one will be going up with it, just as a reminder to myself to double check, every load.

I'm sorry for your injuries but......

Everyone else seems to be dancing around it but I'll say it. You have absolutely not business reloading ammo of any kind. Reading the quotes posted by Dinny of yours from the May-July 2010 time frame anyone should have been able to see that disaster was gonna happen just a matter of when and with which firearm.

You deliberately over loaded most everything and double charged and still didn't stop it. Loaded and fired .454 in .45 chamer after triming a couple thousandths off. All of these are dangerous practices absolute guaranteed to get you hurt sooner or later.

It wasn't an accident and no sense calling it ones. You deliberately ignored safe and sane reloading practices and suffered the consequences. If that upsets you that's life. If it stops just one other member from doing dumb things reloading rather than using only safe pressure tested loads and double checking at every step then good.

Please folks heed the advice I've given hundreds of times. There are old reloaders and there are bold reloaders but there are no OLD BOLD reloders.

very good advice for any reloader!i do that with pistol cases all the time. especially when using shotgun powder.with bottle neck rifle rounds i like to choose a pwder that almost fills the case to a level barely below the base of the seated bullet.zero chance for a double charge and even if yu accidently added a couple extra grains of powder it would just over flow the case mouth.

Glad to hear your better. Hope this does not hijack a tread. This statement is not addressed to any one individual, but to all members. My last 4 of 20 years in the USAF, I was reassigned to a ground safety job, from my career as Weapons Mechanic. This was due to my own stupidity. I picked up a 5 lb. bag of flour, while totally off balance, and blown my back out. While in safety school, I was taught this idea. "There are no such things as accidents, just Acts of God , and Acts of Stupidity". This is now on a sign above my loading bench.

Sorry for your loss, but glad it wasn't worse.  Looking at the photo, it appears the 270 casing is ok.  Is this the one that was in the gun when it exploded?  Is the primer still in the pocket?  Just curious, as it would seem the case would have split.

Good question.

Having survived a bunch of stuff, mostly 'stupidity' of my youth, I am very conscious that I want to save as much as I can of what is left. It has, well, moderated, some of my ventures.
I am also very conscious that humility is a virtue that, as soon as I realize I have it, I have lost it.
Be well and prosper; I am so glad it wasnt worse.
