.22H twist and rifling?
« on: August 23, 2011, 08:10:40 PM »
I read of the .22 Hornet chambered Handi barrels having been avaliable in 1 in 9", 1 in 12" and 1 in 16" twists and some years having microgroove rifling. At the moment I have a 1 in 12" and am wondering what is the advantages/disadvantages of having the other twist rate barrels. Does one have anything on the others. Beside bullet weight/length options,  is one a better shooter than another from anyones expierence with them? Should a handi nut have 'em all in his collection  ::)   ;D

In my experience, with 3 Hornets, the 1:16 will rarely shoot more than a (ballistically stubby) 45gr. bullet accurately. Some have done so, but it is a marginal twist rate for longer, thus heavier, bullets. The 1:12 should be a good one for the Hornet unless you really want to shoot the big heavy .22 cal bullets, probably sub-sonically, in that case. The 1:12 should have  a little lower pressure and give higher velo than the 1:9, while still allowing you to use usefully heavier bullets than the 1:16.
Then again, YMMV.......
