Are you talking about a whole gun or just a barrel and will it fit on a SB1 or two frame

Jason,
Send me an email. I know a guy that does great work. He's backed-up right now, but is well worth the wait. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

remember the 22 mag barrel is a 1-16 twist, so it will not handle the heavier bullets. best of luck with your project.

I had my 22 mag reamed to Hornet and it shot tiny groups with 45gr. bullets.

Traditional Hornet twist is 1:16, according to Greenhill and my experience in 3 Hornets, 45gr. bullets will be tops that will stabilize. I couldnt drive 50s fast enough to overcome the marginal twist of 1:16 (without being way overpressure). It is really more dependent on length, and the new CA bullets without lead may be different.

When converting from the .22 Mag (rimfire) to the .22 Hornet (CF) how do you get the firing pin to align with the centerfire primer?

Easy, put it on a centerfire frame as Jason said he was doing!

Remember that rimfire barrels are smaller bore diameter than modern Hornets. I believe there are still a few bullets made for the old smaller Hornet bores but modern made guns all use she standard .224 diameter. Replacement HandiRifle barrels are so scheap that by the time you pay the gunsmithing etc it might be just as cheap to buy a new barrel. It certainly would be if you could find someone willing to pay a little for your old rimfire barrel.

I lucked out and got 22 mag barrel in classifieds pretty cheap,I got less in it than buying a new barrel, even after the rechamber, and it is a newer micro groove so it shoots the. 224 bullets very well

The difference is a moot point, due to SAAMI tolerances, bore diameters overlap, makes no difference whether the barrel was a rimfire or centerfire, lots of members have done just what Jason has done with absolutely no issues. What may be more important is rimfire barrels are 1137 mild steel compared to 4140 alloy for centerfire rifle barrels, so barrel life may by an issue with higher velocities and jacketed bullets.

And you need to get up to speed on accessory barrel prices, they're a minimum of $160 with shipping both ways, fitting and tax.   ;)
