45-70 /500 S&W / 30-30 /44 Mag Shorties Please show em
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:33:13 PM »
I bought a 45-70 from a local pawn shop, looks brand new, $200.00 out the door. I want to have the barrel shortened to 16.25 to deer hunt with.

Please post pics of your shorties or give me a link to look at. My search is weak.

I did a 16.25 barrel in 44 mag on an SB2 frame with a youth synthetic stock set. with some plastic foam and a small bag of lead shot in the stock, it is a keeper topped of with a 4X BSA tactical scope mounted low just in front of the hammer.

I am thinking this will get me my first deer this coming season!

Now you have me leaving myself a note to bring the camera home from work to take a picture.

Like, you show me yours and I will show you mine!!

The third from the top is my 18" .38-55.  The fourth is a standard 20" BC, and the fifth is my 16.5 inch Maxi.  Medium rings for that one should be in today.

Just a note. I have said it before and most know I love shorties...for SOME calibers!
I had a 14" contender in 45-70...it was a BLAST to shoot..BLAST is key word! NOT the most pleasant. Same for the 30-30... quite a blast. The 500 sounds good but I suspect at its pressures and bore diameter it too would be quite loud to the shooter...
Pistol calibers are best followed by shotguns.
I'm not talking range time here, we all are or should be wearing hearing protection. For me a firearm is defensive or hunting. I dont have hearing protection for either...
I have a couple short Marlins in 30-30 and 35 Rem.. I don't shoot them too much because of this.

Just a thought,

BKS,

pics of 45ACP & 357 Talo attached.  Both guns approx. 18.5" barrel length.  I have a 45-70 & 30-06 @ approx. the same length barrels and as CW pointed out they do bark pretty loudly.  The '06 is by far the worst for noise pollution.  If I can remember I will try and get a pic of the 45-70.

Like CW said, muzzle blast will be an issue, especially if you hunt from an enclosed stand or blind.
I have an 8mm Mauser that was cut down to 18" (it's 16.5" now!). I was letting my son and his friends shoot it one day. We were a little close to the house, and after one shot I heard something hit the floor inside. When I investigated I found some of my wife's junk (SORRY, DEAR!) had fallen off a shelf. The muzzle blast had pounded the wall so hard it shook those things down, AND cracked the window. Probably 7-8 years ago and I still haven't heard the last of it!
I love my .45-70 BC, but my granddaughter's .357 max Trapper is threatening to take 1st place from it. Short Handi's are just handy!

Hey guys,
On the subject of shorties I just ordered a 44mag with the intentions of shortening it to16.5 in. I am wanting to put a Williams peep and fire sight on it I called williams to order the sights and they wanted the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle and breech. I do not have the barrel yet so I cannot give that info to them. If anyone has that info or could tell me what size or model number you put on yours I would appreciate it

ALL H&R rifles and shotguns are 1.1" at the breech end except for the 10ga based models, the 44mag is ~.840" at 16½".  ;)
