My only experience is with the 44 Mag, in 2 Ruger Super Blackhawks, a Winchester M94, a Ruger 44 Carbine and a S&W M29 6.5" revolver.  I can, from over 40 yrs. experience in reloading/hunting/ and target shooting with this caliber, and taking many cleanly killed game animals-I like the 44 Mag.  I have taken somethings with 45 rds,-45ACP, very cleanly, but when you get into he 45 cal class-so many more effective upgrades come into play that the 45 Colt is degraded to a 38 Special wadcutter  status. There  some good loads, but seem to be a waste of time, to only biut a purist-good luck.

The wicked witch of the West ::) I do not have nor have I shot a 45 Colt, but the 44 Magnum is plenty accurate for it's range. There were issues with the 44 Magnum, until 2007, when the bore was tightened up to .4295 or so. Get a 44 Magnum and a box or two of Winchester White Box 240 grain soft points. You will not be disappointed.

Here is 3 shots at 50 yards with the WWB 240 grain soft points - about 1". This was with a 2.5X scope, first try.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Each and every barrel has its own identy. Accuracy of a given barrel is NOT dependent of caliber... It IS dependant of materials and the WAY its built.

I offer, you choose your favorite caliber and buy it. There are things that can be done AFTER that to increase taht barrels  accuracy.

DON'T get hung up on inherent accuracy of a straight walled cartridge like these two. One is no more accurate than the other.

Now, you your looking at what caliber will do what, I prefer the 45 COLT. It's a dandy at light stuff and will surpass the 44 with a heavy weight. I also offer it will surpass the 44 any bullet weight when loaded by a good hand loader. I have loaded my 45's with 155's to 360 Gr bullets, the grand ol 45COLT can do it all...

I load my 45 colt carbine with 250 xtp at 900 fps it i s very accurate at 50 yards with open sights  it will definately shoot better than I can,my 44 will hold 2" groups at 100 yards with 240 xtp at about 1400 fps, I like shooting the colt very quiet load

The 45 Colt has the accuracy (and power) advantage particularly with the heavier bullets due to the slow 1:38" twist of the 44mag,  Ruger/TC levels in the 1:20" Colt tip the playing field for the Colt, 250gr bullets at 2000fps for the Colt vs ~1800fps for 240gr in the 44mag and it just gets better for the Colt as you increase bullet weight.

One big advantage to mention for the Colt in a factory rifle is it came on an SB2 frame when it was in production which ended a few years ago, the 44mag currently comes on an SB1 which limits the barrel  options, but on an SB2 frame the 44mag can always be rechambered to 445 Supermag(300gr @~2000fps,  GBO reamer) or even 444 Marlin, and the Colt can be rechambered to Casull(GBO reamer) or 460, lots of options if the basic platform doesn't perform to your expectations.  ;)

Both cartridges are accurate, or they would not have lasted this long.  The rest depends on the rifle and shooter.  Mostly the shooter.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
