T/C 7.62x39mm barrels (.308 vs .311)
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:46:08 AM »
From what I understand.  Typical 7.62x39mm rounds are .311 bullets and I have seen references that 7.62x39mm T/C barrels are .308 bore.  Can the .311 bullets be shot from these T/C barrels?  How will the performance be effected?

Yes they can, though accuracy may not be the best.

I once had a very nice Bulberry 7.62x39 that I sold to someone here on GBO. I called Bullberry (shortly after I ordered the barrel and asked about this very issue....

I was advised to stay away from factory or surplus ammo because of the larger bullets. The larger bullet diameter causes an undesirable spike in pressure.  Also the accuracy can suffer.  The barrel I had was an excellent shooter with any .308 projectile. Shot a big old buck with it

I have a T/C 7.62X39 barrel. I shot Wolf standard ammo in it until I read of the size difference. Since I had a large quantity of the Wolf, I started to read about alternatives. I read (on GBO I think) about pulling the .311 bullets, retaining the powder and installing standard .308 projectiles. The post mentioned the Lee factory crimp die, so I ordered one. It seems the barrel was not harmed by the .311 bullets that were shot in it as it is very accurate with the new combination. I have used the Remington .308 125gr PSPs and am satisfied and need not try others. I shoot steel gongs and don't hunt anymore, love the ring of lead on steel!

I recently got a good deal on a Saiga in 7.62x39mm.  I decided to pick one up, partly because of cheap ammo (Wolf, Bear and etc) available.  I was contemplating picking up a 7.62x39mm barrel for my Encore so I could shoot the same cheap ammo, but if it requires hand loading for .308" instead of .311" it kind of defeats the purpose.
