Questions about the 45/410
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:31:03 PM »
Why doesn't the 45/410 shoot accurately? I know there is a long jump to the rifling when you shoot 45's but should that really make that big of a difference? My Maxi shoots 38's into tiny little groups and there is a long jump to the rifling. Some of you guys with the 45-120's have reported good accuracy when shooting 45-70 ammo. There is a long jump there too. I don't understand the difference... why do the others shoot well and the 45's don't shoot worth beans? Is there something different with the throating or is the forcing cone on the 45/410 barrel to blame or ??? Anyone got any ideas?

Good question Spanky, I've wondered that myself and one reason I opted out of buying the 45/410 which is what I wanted, but settled for the 45LC instead.

Even if someone could attain accuracy with reloads, like heavy slow cast bullets, I'd like to hear.

An accurate 45/410 would still be nice to have.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

While your examples do have a substantial "jump" to reach the rifling the 3" 410  chamber is over one inch of freebore when shooting a 45 COLT. Thats an immence amount of unsupported flight to expect good accuracy. Not to mention the chamber differences. Your other examples are the same chamber diameters not so with a .410 and a 45 COLT. Its close and sure it works, but at a cost of not so great accuracy. In the same reguard the rifling plays havoc with good patterns in an already short range chambering. So neither one is a real winner.

I havent owned a H&R in this chambering, but i have had pistol and a carbine barrel for the contender. They are the same. As a matter of fact, I bought three or four pistol barrels before i fou d one that even shot straight!!

Its a novelty or maybe a Survival or even a SHTF firearm at best.

I too feel the ,410/,45 is a poor compromise rendering both loads inadequate.  I don't know why H&R keeps it around and drops fine calibers like the 7x57, 7.62x39 and the BC Carbine.  Oh, and by the way, my 7.62 has never had a FTF.

No crimp groove on the 230 .451 XTP so the secret to accuracy in a 45LC is a 45ACP bullet? ::)

Doc,

Wanted to know if your bullet selection works in reverse so I loaded a bunch of 250 grain JHPs w/crimp groove for my 45 ACP Handi.   ::)

I solved my problem by fireforming 9.3x74R brass, like this:
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,223383.0.html

The load I ultimately settled on might not be powerful enough for you, but it shoots straight.

As for shot, i load the same cases with 1/2 oz #6 shot, and an overshot card; but its a very short range proposition.

Doc,

I am using published load data for the 45 Super which is 28K Cup instead of the 21K of the 45 ACP.  My 45 rimless is on an SB2 action and I am also using starline's 45 Super brass, so no worries.

John makes a good point, shotgun and rimfire barrels are 1137 mild steel, not the 4140 alloy that's used in blued high pressure centerfire barrels.
