Remington Made Transfer Bar Issues ...
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:00:48 AM »
A fellow match shooter has a Remington made Handi.  After about 2000 rounds the transfer bar engages 60 thousands below the firing pin when the hammer is cocked.  Also, holding the hammer cocked, release the trigger - the transfer bar drops below the firing pin for the same distance.

The Remington made Handi was compared to several H&R an NEF's - no issues as above, even after thousands of rounds expended

The rifle was disassembled and determined that the hole cut in the trigger strut is too high

Any similar experiences with anyone?
And sending it back to Remington is not an option... machining a new strut will be made.  The rifle is now a 44-40  ;D

No one has had this issue?  Or is it no one has shot 2000 + rounds through their rifle?

Well I have not shot thousands through any one handi -Remington made or older. And I have not had that problem either. Not being a smarty just didn't want you to feel ignored. I have never heard of the problem in that depth of description. I know some rifles had a recall for the transfer bar but I don't think shooting thousands of rounds qualifies as a factory defect.... sounds like it just wore and needed replaced. Just my thoughts on it.  thejanitor

I tend to agree with Brent, thejanitor.  I too have shot thousands of rounds thru Handies, but not 2000 through one.  While the hole was off from the begining, it did work properly for a normal lifetime of shooting.  I don't know if Remington will give you any satisfaction on the issue, but it is worth a try.

Not that it is related to the problem, I was wondering what condition the barrel was in after that many rounds.

Good luck,

 Pete

Pete, all the 44-40 rounds were lead cast bullets.  Bore shines with no wear!

John Boy, that's a sweet old caliber.  How was it put together?  I have .45-70, .38-55, .32-20, .45LC and would like someday to add a .44-40 to the group.

Gents, the Search for the Answer is Closed.  Talked with my friend today.  He fabricated a new trigger extension that was 0.060 longer.  Transfer bar rises properly and doesn't drop

Pete:  a SB1 28ga that was relined wit a TJ's Enterprise liner and chambered to 44-40

Tried using Ctrl F, "TRANSFER BAR  AND MISFIRES" but got "text entered was not found". Tried just TRANSFER BAR and after hitting several others with the words transfer bar I finally came to the  TRANSFER BAR  AND MISFIRES link. Is it just my PC?

No Bill I have search issues here too. I would be shure it was just me but others seem to have the same problem. but then again Quickdtoo amaises me at what he can find. I had the same problem with miss firing. but at only a few hundred rounds. Rem took it back and made it right. DR

When I use Ctrl f to search a page, I usually just use part of what I'm looking for, in this case trans worked.  ;)
