« on: June 24, 2011, 04:29:44 PM »
hi everyone im new here and i think i am getting the bug. im thinking about buying the stainless ultra hunter 45-70 as my first h&r. any pros and cons would be helpful. I always wanted a 45-70 and i think this is a good looking gun and would look good with a blue barrel also as i can see myself adding extra barrels in the future. any help or guidence would be great, thanks in advance pat from saginaw michigan.

I got one here off the classified last fall (?), the thumbhole stock was already changed out and I didnt want it anyway, but the real part of the gun has been a dandy. Im a cast bullet guy and it has shot every load Ive tried in it to satisfaction, from 300, 340, 405 and 500's with light loads to class II 45-70 (Marlin type) loads. Just did a thorough cleaning after probably 100 lead rounds using a test bottle of the new S&W Bore Gel for a product review and it shows NO leading. BTW, that product works really well.
In short, mine is a shooter; based on it, get one!

I just got one recently. Topped it with a Nikon pro staff 2X7X32 I only had rem 405gr and hornady LE to shoot in it. I bore sighted it and just shot for group. The rem 405gr shot an 1 3/4" at 100 yards. The hornadys were all over over the place. I have a hard time sitting for extended lengths of time and didn't think the the thumb hole stock would be good for still hunting so I swapped them out for a set of cinnamon laminates. If you go back and find my thread there are pictures.

thanks for the replys tried to go back  to see your photos but could not find them. i just got a couple quotes from dealers in my area and it looks like i will order one by friday, pretty pumped never shot a 45-70 but excited to say the least. one question though do they make a new gun in stainless every year but in a different caliber or is this just a special made gun.  i have read other post on barrels in stainless and would like to maybe get one.

They've only made one all stainless rifle, the Ultra Hunter in 45-70 and 444 Marlin have been available since 2008, you'll only find the 444 Marlin version in southeastern markets tho, it's not available except from select distributors. You'll like it if you don't mind the weight, mine shoots excellent.  ;)
