Don't know much except it was a chambering in the Winchester 1895 lever action along with the 30-03, 30-06, 30-40, 405 Win. It was
a capable round for hunting Moose and big bears, launching a 250gr 35 caliber bullet at 2200fps. Because of the unusual stacked magazine on the Model 95, it could utilize spitzer bullets but because you could not mount a scope, it was a moot point. Open sites might get you to 200 yds and a round nose worked just fine at that range. Teddy Roosevelt used a .405 Win (300gr RN jacketed bullet at 2200fps) as his big medicine rifle. Until the 375 H&H hit the seen, the .405 Win was the most powerful cartridge at the time. Yes the 30-40 brass can be used to make 35 Win brass but it's not perfect for the task. Rim thickness and diameter are slightly different as is the head demension of the case. A handi-rifle probably could be rechambered for it but the
question would be "why" when it's available in the 35 Whelen and the 35 Win can't come close the the Whelen. Just my two cents.
