35 Winchester, anyone know much about them?
« on: June 29, 2011, 03:03:01 PM »
Just read an old sportsman's book (1913) and they were raving about the then new 35 winchester.

Sounds like it was a 30-40 krag necked up to 35 cal. 250 bullet at 2200 fps.

A rimmed case.

Would this be a good Handi rifle cartridge? Could brass be made from 30-40 Krag? Could
a 35 remington be reamed out?

Don't know much except it was a chambering in the Winchester 1895 lever action along with the 30-03, 30-06, 30-40, 405 Win.  It was
a capable round for hunting Moose and big bears, launching a 250gr 35 caliber bullet at 2200fps.  Because of the unusual stacked magazine on the Model 95, it could utilize spitzer bullets but because you could not mount a scope, it was a moot point.  Open sites might get you to 200 yds and a round nose worked just fine at that range.  Teddy Roosevelt used a .405 Win (300gr RN jacketed bullet at 2200fps) as his big medicine rifle.  Until the 375 H&H hit the seen, the .405 Win was the most powerful cartridge at the time.  Yes the 30-40 brass can be used to make 35 Win brass but it's not perfect for the task.  Rim thickness and  diameter are slightly different as is the head demension of the case.  A handi-rifle probably could be rechambered for it but the
question would be "why" when it's available in the 35 Whelen and the 35 Win can't come close the the Whelen.  Just my two cents.

In the stronger Handi, it should be almost the equivalent to the 35 Whelen.  The rim is a little narrower and slightly thinner, IIRC, than the 405 Win.  If you could find someone with a reamer to cut the 35 Win case, but use the 405 Win rim, you would be good to go, and just re-form 405 Cases.
Thats what I did with the 38-72 and rechambered a 38-55 barrel.

I have an 1895 win in 35 Win.

Hadn't heard of the cartridge til yesterday.

Just went to the Nosler reloading site and someone else was asking about it too.

The have a great photo of one next to a 30-06 case.

Not much difference in capacity it looks.

I thought about purchasing a 357 mag Handi a year or so ago and rechambering it to 35.303 but decided against it as the twist rate was not suitable for the weight projectiles I wanted to shoot. Appears to be a very similar round to the 35 winchester.

Might be easier to go with a 35 Krag. Easier to find brass, dies etc. It really doesn't sacrifice anything to the 35 Winchester
