lol, they kick a bit. Imagine the 12 and the 10 gauge.

We were screwing around and made some short 12 gauges with pistol grips, omg. The only way you can shoot them is with the low recoil.

Thus why my 'Buck' barrel 12 is called the '.727 Overkill'  ;)!
There is a recoil calc online (handloads.com?) that lets you plug in gun weight and load. The 12ga. in a lightweight Handi with factory Foster slug 2 3/4" loads is generating recoil like some of the smaller cal. Africa rifles.
Get the 'feel' of it without breaking the bank  ;D.

If you want recoil, shoot the Winchester Partition Gold 385 grain at 2000 fps........ 55+ pounds of recoil !

Jason,

Have you shot your Lyman slugs through a chrony?  Alliant's reloading data give 1,425 FPS with an 1.25 oz shot load (didn't see slug data) with a charge of 37.5 grains of Blue Dot.  I shoot those same slugs using WSF but I stopped @ 30 grains and have settled on 25 grains.  Also, I am shooting them out of an autoloader, not a Tracker.  Might be time to make friends with an orthopedic surgeon. ;)

The typical 'Foster' slug loads are 1oz (some 1.25 in 3" ?) at around that 1600fps range; and they are brutal in mine. I 'detuned' some by reducing the powder charge by 25% and they were not too bad, and still accurate at 50yd.
I have to get some of the correct shotcups to try the Lymans, or will they work with about anything?

First time I shot a slug out of my 12 ga Pardner, It felt like somebody punched me in the rotator cuff.
After that, I stopped, switched over to the 410 barrel, and spent the rest of the afternoon just shooting 410 shells.

Went home, dissected the stock, filled the hole with left over BB pellets from my air pistols, and inserted a recoil pad.

What a difference. The increased weight of the stock absorbs more of the 12 ga recoil. Problem is, the Pardner is not as
much fun to lug around anymore because it weighs much more. But you don't have that flinching anticipation anymore when you pull the trigger because it won't kick back as much. Wearing a shotgun recoil vest makes it even much better but the LOP is increased a little too much making aiming a little awkward.

I guess nobody died from a little shotgun recoil......

I tried the lead weigt in the butt, threw the balance off too much, weighed more as you say, and did not dampen recoil enough to offset the weight.
The most effective was going to a stock H&R recoil pad equiped stock and adding a slip on extra.
Im long armed enough to get away with that solution (and that leather 'slip-on' does look classy).
I suppose somebody here shoots these with a hard plate buttstock  :o and considers it a loafing load.
A man's got to know his limitations.........

Depending on powder you can use f114 yellow wads with unique and herco

Jason,

the Blue Duster, 1 1/8 oz. 12 ga. trap wads work well with the WSF powder & the Lyman sabots.  I am using HI brass remington & federal hulls that were originally loaded with buckhammers & barnes expanders, respectively.

I also found that I can keep the lyman sabots to Minute of Paper Plate @ 100 yards shooting them out of a smooth bore slug barrel, although they are more accurate out of a fully rifled barrel.

It is my 'stopping gun' so 100yd. MOPP groups arent required (but always nice), especially offhand with open sights on a hard kicker.
I discovered that it needs to be held firmly, but not tightley, to hurt less. Tightly has too much muscle tension; you need to just roll with the recoil, let it happen and go with it. Way big improvement for me anyway.

Jason,

All the Handi shotgun barrels come on an SB1 frames except for the 12 ga USH & 10 ga models.  Although your 12 kicks a lot because of the light weight of the gun and the heavy weight of the projectile the chamber pressure of a 12 ga is fairly low.

FWIW, rifled barrels, like the Tracker II's, do best with saboted slugs & vice-versa.

Likewise, non-rifled barrels, like older Ithaca Deerslayer's, do better with non-saboted, Foster-type or Brenneke-type slugs - which, in turn, do better in non-rifled barrels than in rifled ones.

To each, their own...................

Since I use my Tracker II for hunting, I really don't care how hard it recoils, since I'm not very concerned about a followup shot - it's a SS gun, and either the deer, or me, will be flat on our backs.   ;)    ;D

One mans kick is another mans shove, it's just all so subjective. I've often heard that if you don't mind shooting a round of trap with a 12 ga that you are not very recoil sensitive.
I do know that 12 ga Foster 2 3/4" x1600ish fps are something I won't shoot off a bench, I have to be able to roll with the recoil.

NP - Just place a small bag of birdshot between the butt & your shoulder, when sighting-in, and/or shooting off a bench.
It works wonders.........................................

Jason F,
I have to laugh. I did the same as you. My daughter shoots a 20 USH I built her and I thought I would build myself a super lite 12. By the time I finished the stocks and assembled the gun it weighed 5 lbs. I  took it to the range and touched it off with a sand bag between it and my shoulder. My glasses went one way and my muffs ended up on the scope. Holy ****. I am 6-3 @ 220 lbs and it earned my respect. I have since increased the weight to 7 lbs and installed a Limbsaver custom pad and now I love it. Find the right combo and you will like yours also.

Thunder, I like that,"earned my respect"!
Now that she's got some weight on her is it like 'when the fat lady sings'?

JasonF, I have not been on the H&R forum in quite some time, but your post caught my eye!
I   got a Tracker II 12ga in 2003, and shot the Lyman 525gr slug with 44gr Blue dot in the 2 3/4" AA hull with WAA12R wad as shown in the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handabook, 4th ed. My notes state that the load was punishing and succeeding shots were difficult as my shoulder began to resemble hamburger..... I did chrony that load at 1450fps.   I also found that 43gr of Blue Dot gave a better crimp with this load,
I did not continue long with this, as I found the 2 3/4" Federal Power Shok, , F127ss, with a 437gr BRI sabot style slug at 1372fps was more managable, and just as accurate.

Oh.......and I had the bbl Mag-Na-Ported, and added a Dead Mule mercury recoil reducer to the butt stock.  The Mag-Na-Port keeps the bbl down for  better followup to the shot, and I never felt the gun to be imbalanced by the Dead Mule......
Squirrel.......the OTHER dark meat.....!
