Just as the title says, I'd like to know if you own a survivor stock and if you like it?

I've got a regular handi 308 with the camo stock that I was thinking about buying a set of the survivor stock with matching forend.  My only reservations are that the survivor stock doesn't have a recoil pad, and even though the factory camo stock I have on mine now does have a recoil pad it kicks like a mule.  So I'm worried about the survivor stock being worse on recoil, but maybe it's not.  I'd just like to know what people who own and use those stocks think of them.

I have one on my 12ga Survivor and one on a 20ga/357mag combo. I have a slip on recoil pad on both. 12ga still kicks like a mule though.
Have lights? Thank a Lineman!

Do you use the storage compartment, and do you find it to be reasonably useful?

Had one on a 308 survivor, the only thing I would have used the storage for was lead shot to slow that kicking mule down!

I keep a few items in there. My 12ga is my walkabout firearm. Kinda handy to have some extra items in there in case my main gear is lost or damaged.

I use a Survivor butt stock for a fairly unique reason. I've got a condition called ulnar abutment syndrome, which basically means one bone is longer than the other in my forearm, causing pain on the outside edge of my wrist.  Surgeon wanted to cut out a section of the longer bone, but I said uh-uh, I'll just change my life style.  I find that an upright AR-style pistol grip is more comfortable than a traditional pistol grip, and the Survivor was the cheapest way to get a vertical grip.  (Interchangable components that allow "customization" is one thing I like about the H&R's.)  I took off the swing-away butt plate cap, and use a slip-on LimbSaver to close off the end of the butt stock.  Recoil is no problem with 44mag and 20ga slugs.  Just because the hollow cavity was there, I stuffed in a small knife, fire starter, and space blanket, but I've never used them.  Would probably better use that space to hold a snickers bar.  ;D

I have a like new Survivor Buttstock and forend with sling, that I would trade for your Camo set. If interested, shoot me a pm.

Add a regular recoil pad to the rifle, then add a Limbsaver slip-on...that'll tame the little blighter! If you have to put a youth stock on to get the right LOP, then so-be-it! I hate recoil too!

Well, after a lot of debating I ended up seeing the stock on midway for aobut $32 and figured it'd be worth a try.  I also got the matching forend and installed both last night.  I like the grip of the survivor stock much more than the regular camo stock, but I still need to get out to the range to see if I like how the recoil is.  I haven't had time to load up the storage compartments in the gun yet, but I will soon and update the thread.

I'm looking forward to your range reports.  I was thinking of ordering one from Midway too but the lack of recoil pad has me concerned.

I've got one also, and if used for solely what it's purpose is, and that it's not for a range gun then it doesn't really need a recoil pad.

A pistol grip stock configuration puts your arm in a position that weights the stock down and that causes your arm weight to help dampen the recoil, and if you've ever shot at game you know that you hardly ever feel the recoil unless your unfortunate enough to get a scope eye, but that's another topic.

I also think that you would only feel the punch if you were shooting hot loads of 45-70 or maybe a 30-06 or 500 S&W, and there are maybe a few others as well, and I feel a 308 would not be one of them, but then you wouldn't be shooting a lot of rounds with any kind of stock on a heavy recoil rifle without some type of pad.

So that said, you can slip on a recoil pad if you need to shoot at the range, and remove it for using the stock out in the field where even a pretty stout recoil will not even be felt.

I've got a 454 Casull set up on mine, and it's a known heavy hitter even though it's a pistol round, it still gets your attention even in a rifle and I don't think there is a need for a recoil pad, on the Survivor.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

As far as what I plan on putting in the stock, I'd like to put a nice little kit that would allow, fire starting, fishing line & hooks, some 550cors & ammo.  I'm going to have to play around with it quite a bit before i figure out just how much of those things I'll be able to stuff in there.  I do feel pretty good though that the stock will be able to hold enough to help a guy get by a little more comfortably in the field if it had to.  I have to admit, that I'm not completely sure about what to do with the forend though.  I like the idea of the empty storage area, but since i like to keep my barrels free floated I'm not sure I want anything in there just rolling around or rattling.  I'll see what I can come up with and that's more of the fun anyway.

I have a Survivor stock on my .308, and I like it.   Because of the larger and longer butt stock, it seems to spread the recoil out over a wider area and for that reason, it seems to lessen the recoil.   The grip seems more natural to me and as a result, I feel more comfortable shooting.

Yeah, I like the Survivor stock.
