What to try stipple forend of airgun. Any advice?

Never have tried it, but heard of it being done with leather working tools....some sort of a back grounding punch.  Maybe a guy could mask out his pattern with a heavy tape and then sand blast it?? Then go in and cut a border around it. Almost tried that once, but ended up checkering it instead.

I've seen people use a dremel with a small round bit. Just touch the bit to take a small amount of material out. You can do it at random or try to maintain a pattern. It looked pretty good.
Try it on a piece of scrap first.

  I've done a lot of it.  I took a 20D nail and ground the tip flat but shaped something like a diamond.  Then use a light hammer and practice on some scrap to get what you want.
 
  I've did a lot of it, especially on walnut target gun stocks...
