CZ Barrle Breakin Howa Style
« on: January 07, 2011, 03:35:41 AM »
Recently bought a new CZ 527 Varmint in .204.  I've been reading up on barrel breakin as I don't want to shoot 300 rounds to get it to shoot well.  I did the shoot one. clean, shoot one, clean..etc for 5 shots...then shoot 5 and clean etc to 50.  Almost there.  Then I found this break in procedure for Howa rifles and thought...maybe I should try that and get results immediately. Has anyone tried the windex thing?

Thanks Shamu that was interesting. I've never heard of the Windex thing I guess in theory it makes sense. With any barrel it's best not to overheat it, ever. IMHO nothing good can ever come from that. Only the best custom barrels would be hand lapped to smooth them out so I'd say the practice of shooting one round, then cleaning is an attempt to smooth the barrel as quickly as possible. That being said fire lapping is always an option as well.

BTW Shamu I stopped in my local gun shop a few days ago and he had a Howa for sale. It was the first one I'd ever seen. this one was a lightweight in .223 with a green Houge stock. The dealer was asking $499 for the rifle set up with scope mounts and bipod. Not a bad looking deal but I'm partial to walnut stocks.

The Howa break in procedure is to polish or smooth out the rifling.    I follow a similar procedure on my new rifles.

Then I clean them all the way down with a final pass of denatured alcohol to get the barrel completely dry.  Then I treat the barrel with plate+.  It is a molydisulfide and it will seal the barrel completely.  You do a little maintenance with your regular cleaning and make the last few passes with plate+ to keep it sealed.

Works great and nearly eliminates fouling if you keep it up.  Google sprinco or plate+.

Since CZ laps their barrels at the factory, why do a barrel break-in?  My two shot great out of the box and never had a problem with copper fouling.
