Land Convance

In our Statehood act, it is written.  The Federal Government will transfer lands to the state within 50 years of statehood.  OK we became a state in 1958.  2008 made the 50 years, and the feds have not transfered the land.  We went after them to see that this happens.  The money for the conveyance is in the current budget being fought over by congress and the White House.  We just got word President Obama struck the funding for the conveyance from the budget.

Once the budget is passed without this money, our attournies say we are going to court.  Darn we now have a bunch of things in the courts.  Us and Utah.

First I've heard of this, although I'm not up on Alaska statehood stuff... I just spent a few minutes reading over the act but I didn't really study it.  Can you direct me to the section you refering to?

Seems our gov't would rather give money away in the guise of foreign aid, than to keep its mind on domestic affairs, and matters of state. Hopefully AK can force the issue successfully.

dukkiller:  I am quoting the attornies and ex- legislatures I had a meeting with yesterday.  I too am unable to find the fifty year they are refering too.  several other members of the think tank were refering to the same issue, herefore I feel it is correct.  I will ask questions on it's exact location and get back with you.  Rog

That was my thought also.  But then I remembered that nothing the government does is that simple, or cheap.

To keep things in perspective, a report I saw last night on the news demonstrated the efficiency of liberal government at its best.  Seattle Washington decided many years ago that it needed to improve (replace) the bridge over Lake Washington.  At the time, it was estimated that a new bridge would cost under $300 million.  There were studies, planning, more studies, more planning and on and on.  To date, more than $400 million have been spent and not one shovel full of dirt has been turned.  The best estimate is that it will be 17 more years before a new bridge might happen and the cost will be in the billions.
