mossburg 702 or ruger 10/22
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:22:16 PM »
Are wal-mart has started carrying firearms again and among their selection was the mossy 702.  I had pretty much decided to get a 10/22, but then I seen this rifle and its pricetag of only $117 has made me rethink my decision.  I'm primarly looking for a plinking gun, but also looking for something that I can tinker with.  I know there is a good sized aftermarket for the 10/22 don't know so much about the 702,  just here looking for your opinion on these 2 rifles.

There's really not a whole lot you can do with a 702 besides for putting tech sights on and buying more magazines.

With the 10/22 you can build a whole rifle without even touching a Ruger part.

What about comparison shooting wise,  really the only major plans I had for the moment was really a restock to something neat, and maybe a good accurizing,  but if the 702 is a good shooter out of the box i would be able to live with it for a while.

I've never scoped my 702, but it seems to be fairly accurate. I would say that the 10/22 is more suitable for making accurate, though.

If you want low cost out-of-the-box accuracy, your chances would be better with a Savage or Marlin. Just my $.02...
If your're into semi-autos, often Walmart has Savage 64F on a special sale and recently Marlin had a rebate deal on 795s, both made in  America..

Another thing I was just thinking about was that my Mossberg 702 seems to gunk up a lot faster than my 10/22 with federal bulk pack rounds. The 10/22 is also easier to clean.
