45-70 gov't scope
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:43:55 PM »
I just bought a 45-70 gov't and need some suggestionson a suitable scope, moderately priced, also. thisis a 23" barrel. I have a spare NC Star 2-7x32 'pistolero model, but seriously doubt if it will withstand the recoil. Has anyone had any experience with this scope. thanks for all input.

Take a look at the Nikon Omega.

I use that scope on a 444 marlin super 14 pistol also on a 30 super 14 carbine and also on a 7x30 waters super 14 and also on a 45 cal muzzleloader super 14 contender and have had no problems with them and they carry a life time warrenty. on my 45-70 24 inch Encore barrel I use the 3x9 x40 bushnell and have had no problems with it either.

I've had good luck with the Nikon 'ProStaff" 3x9x40 on a 24" 375 Winchester.  I've got a 45-70 also, and believe that the recoil is a bit stiffer from the 375 Win.  Whether it's my imagination or not, the scope has taken some abuse, cost is around $180.00

One of mine wears a Leupold m8 2.5x20mm and the other sports a Leupold Vari-XII 2-7x33, one was $185 the other was $125, I try to pick them up used as they are in good shape and carry the Leupold warranty if needed.

I have a 22" barreled 45-70 Custom Shop barrel for my G1 Contender carbine I have mounted a  Leupold Vari-XII 2-7x33 using Leupold QRW rings so I can pop the scope off when I want to shoot with the stock iron sights.

I have over the years also mounted a Burris Fullfield 1X, Burris Compact 4X, Leupold Vari X 11 1-4X anda new Redfield 2-7X scopes all were workable but I find the 2-7X Leupold my favorite for this barrel/cartridge combo.
