Picked up my first HandiRifle...
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:03:48 PM »
I've been reading this site for months now and couldn't stand it any longer.  Had my local gun shop order me a .357 Handi and got it Monday.  Haven't shot it yet but I did mount a reflex site I had laying around.

Can't wait to take it out and sight it in.  I haven't hunted for years so this rifle will just be used for targets and plinking.  Hope it shoots as well as the H&R Topper .30-30 I had in the late 70's.

WELCOME!!

The 357 is quite commonly a very good shooter and definitely a favorite here every time someone asks about the most accurate or favorite handi!! Your gonna love it!! ;D

We're glad you're here, and happy you chose the .357 Handi.   Now, the two things ya gotta do are to reload for it and ream it to Maximum.  That'll give you three rifles in one, and a world of possibilities for loads.  You can shoot the Maxi quite a LOOOOOONG way with the right primer, powder and bullet.  My Lee die set works fine with the .38s, .357s and Maxis.  Get the carbide set.

Be sure to go to the sticky at the top of the page "How many handis......." and add it.

Good luck, good shooting, and enjoy.  Welcome.

Right now I don't have any interest in the Maximum that might come later.  As for re-loading, I don't think I've ever shot a factory loaded .357 round. ;D  This is my first .357 rifle but I bought my first .357 pistol in the early 70's and have always reloaded.  That's kinda why I bought it as I already had ammo available and didn't have to buy another set of dies.

If you have some 180's there somewhere see how far out you can seat one in the factory chamber, some are quite long. You might be able to gain some throat fill and powder capacity.

What is the effective range of a 357 barrel on a Handi using only factory loads?
I am currently scouting the classifieds for a 357 barrel for sale.
SB1 and SB2 receivers
.223 bull barrel with scope rail
12, 20, and .410 gauge smooth bore barrels
(next on wish list: .357 and .44 mag barrels)

If your're talking about deer, I'd use the Hornady LEs and you should be good out to somewhat  past 100 yards.  If you buy a .357 barrel, ream it to Maximum.....you won't be sorry.  I handload cartridges in the Maximum that are far better than the .357 factory loads.
