Help with my 44mag
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:05:04 AM »
Bought a barrel in 44mag and need to know which chamber is the better one. I was told the chamber on the one I bought was .429, is that the good one?

The groove diameter on late model 44mag barrels is .429"-.430" which is good, pre late2006 barrels had much larger bores.  Chamber dimension, which isn't the same thing, were also bigger on older barrels, but the bore dimension is the important spec, see chamber casting and bore slugging in the FAQs to determine what you have.

Just shoot it!

It will let you know if it's a good one or not! ;)
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Mine was an old overbored barrel, but it shot pretty well.  After reaming it to .445 SM, it still shot well.  This is a pic of the last shot with a Hornady .44 LE.
