Aftrermarket Iron Sights for G2
« on: December 18, 2010, 04:25:51 AM »
Hi Folks...

I recently acquired a 14" .22 LR Match barrel for my G2. It seems very accurate when used with a scope but I plan to use it at an indoor 50-ft. range and a scope seems like overkill for that. However I'm lukewarm on the factory iron sights.

Can anyone refer me to some aftermarket vendors who offer a good sight product for the G2? What would be cool is something I could attach to the Weaver mount currently installed on the gun, but a sight that will fit the factory barrel screw holes is OK too. If a peep sight is practical on the G2, that's what I'd prefer. OBTW, it would be nice if the iron sight cost less than a scope...

TIA for your advice!

Thanks very much, Spinafish. It appears that Williams has a model FP-TC that will fit the existing sight mounting holes on a G2 barrel. I gather it's possible to use the T/C front sight "as is."

If you have used this combination, I'd enjoy reading your comments about that.

The Williams FP-TC looks like exactly what I had in mind for the rear sight on my G2 but that still leaves the front sight to be dealt with. I'm concerned that the factory G2 front wouldn't produce a very dependable sight picture through a rear peep. What's needed is a front sight insert that encircles the target at the chosen distance. Unfortunately Williams doesn't provide a lot of usable information about their front "Globe" sight or its mounting scheme.

I will contact the company and if they respond, I'll put their answers in this thread. Wish me luck!

Breaking news: I was able to reach Williams Gunsights by phone and spoke to their sight technician. Yes, the FP-TC is the correct rear sight for the G2 Contender (and others), and it has a range of aperture to choose from. BUT...

There's no globe (hooded) front sight to be had. Williams has one in their catalog but not for the Contender. In my opinion that's kind of a sticking point. I'm not confident that the T/C factory blade is a good match for a peep sight on the rear.

If anybody knows of a drop-in hood sight for the T/C Contender, please join this thread and fill us in.

TIA...

You might look into a 2-piece front sight.  That will be a dovetail base that screws onto the barrel, and a globe that slips into the dovetail base.  Just a thought, I'll look in my Brownell's catalog......

Dezynco, that's good advice. It's not clear whether the dovetail ramp will fit the Contender but it's worth looking into. In my phone conversation with the sight technician at Williams, he offered rather terse answers to my questions and didn't see fit to mention this ramp, which is a Williams product. I've seen more responsive vendors.

My late-model G2 has two screws on the front sight while the Williams ramp has only one. That's probably OK since this is only a .22 LR barrel, but I wouldn't want to depend on a single screw to hold the sight on my .44M barrel.

I will continue researching and will get back to this thread when I have some answers. Costs are starting to add up (Williams ramp + Williams FP-TC rear sight + Lyman Globe = $150), and at some point I just go with a scope and call it good.

I know this is a bit late, but I've just started to do some research on this and just found this thread. I'm looking at iron sites for one of my barrels also. I'm thinking a blade rear is better that a peep at pistol hold lengths. I found this set up at EABCO, all though I dont really like the rear, it will mount to a scope base and I can swap it out with a Williams rear, and the set up comes with a nice front sight..
