Royal Walnut!!!!
« on: February 16, 2011, 04:28:53 PM »
Not real sure just what Royal Walnut is, but it sure is pretty. And the smell!!!!  Man I just love the smell while working Walnut. Take a little time and whittle away! ;D I dampened the wood with water to show the grain, also it raises the grain so you can de-whiskers the wood. If it looks this good just dampened I bet it will pop with finish!!!

David,

Royal Walnut is most often referred to as a hybrid between Claro (Juglans hindsii) and Eastern Black (Juglans nigra) walnuts.   Royal walnut was cultivated for the color/figure of Claro and the strength of EBW.

A very nice set there pard.   You did a great job of matching color/figure on the grip and forend.  Color is "A typical, and the figure harvest location dependant from the tree.

I still have some Paradox Walnut (J. hindsii X J. regia), or Claro X Persian/English, that was hybridized mainly for its unusual colors, color contrasts and figure yet still has good strength.   It's often confused with Bastogne by the uninformed (J. regia X J. nigra sp.) or English X Black sp.   Made a few custom predator calls out of it some years ago.

Tiger walnut ! Wow, that is beautiful. When I work with walnut the aroma instantly takes me back to woodshopI, 1962. I still have most of my projects.

There's Fiddleback Walnut, Fiddleback Maple, and then there's Tiger Maple.

Have a bunch of this in 4A and 5A Exhibition Grade.   Bet it'd make a heck of a TC set like it did for this Marlin.

David,

I remember when you first posted these.   Nice.

So is Spalted Screwbean Mesquite with Birdseye Maple caps, both exhibition grade.   This is a set Justin Sip made for me 17-18 years ago to my specs when he was still the wood man at Bullberry for my Bullberry 12" 22 Match barrel.   The wood came from Fred's private stash, and he still keeps a picture of it on his home page (not a very good picture that I took on the red cliffs the St. George area is known for).

I have a lot of exhibition maple burl, both root and aerial, and spalted maple as well, but the only pics I have of them made into something is predator calls I made.    Here's just a couple of examples that would make nice TC sets though.

Big Leaf Maple Burl - Silver Maple Root Burl

I also have a huge slab of Old World Olive that would make nice sets, and I think the Latan and Black Palms might as well.

Olive (Israel) - CR Cocobolo - Latan Palm (Reunion Island) - Queensland Black Palm

The Red Coco is from a big trunk section I got in Costa Rica, but I don't have big enough pieces of it left to do a TC set.

Nice to see somebody else around here that appreciates special wood like I do enough to work with them like I have from the 50's.

Larry,

What got you into wood working?

My father and grand father started teaching me to work wood at an early age. They both passed on 20 odd years ago when I was in my early 30's. To this day when in the shop it's like their there with me. That feeling ever gos away I will quit working wood. I use to make book cases, shadow box's, decorative shelves and such.

Grips and forearms are different than the items above. They are more like whittling not cut and fit. I have no duplicator like some. Ever grip and forearm I make are shaped by hand. No 2 are identical, but close. Once the through holes are drilled and the top inletted for the frame I cut the two dimensional shape of the grip then use a small grinder with a carbide wheel to shape the grip. Forearms after inletting the frame area, cut the barrel channel, drill the mounting holes, are shaped with a band saw and a oscillating sander.

I love the smell of Walnut!!!! ;D
