contender octogon 44 mag barrel

 I just acquired one of these, it is ten inches long, and the end of the barrel screws off. it belonged to the father of the person I got it from, and he could give me no info on it, as his father had passed away, and left him the gun. Is there any purpose of this potion of the barrel that screws off?

It's called a "choke". It is to stop the rotation of a shot load when fired.  (It's called a "hotshot" bbl.). Be sure to take it off before firing 44 cal..  Pat

Yep, as pat said the choke is for "hot shot" ammo which is no longer available (unless you assemble your own).  As stated, it stops the rotation and also shreds the shot capsule.  Original factory hot shot loads are rare and quite expensive when you run across them.  As said, be sure to remove the choke for regular 44 mag loads.  Oh........and, get ready for some recoil!!  I have a 10" octagon 44, but it has a regular muzzle and no choke.  It's a hand full with heavy loads.
