My "new" Contender
« on: January 27, 2011, 07:03:08 AM »
I recently made my first ever Contender purchase.  I found a used, but excellent condition, Contender with two 10" heavy barrels for sale online.  Its an older one, the serial number puts it as 1986 production if the sources I found are correct.  Barrels included were .357 Maximum with a 2.5x TC scope and a .32 H&R Magnum with iron sights.  The TC scope is a little worse for wear, though its still functional, everything else is in great shape.  The trigger pull is fantastic.  Luckily for me I already handload both cartridges.  The best part, $350 including shipping and transfer fee.

Landric, Oh My...you did good!  Pachy's and all.  Two great barrels for starters too.  Be aware(you probably are already)that the 32 is really a .308 instead of a .312.  Those ol' TC scopes are tough as nails too.  Enjoy! ;D

I have heard that the Contender .32 barrels are actually .308 bore.  Of course I have also heard that so long as a cartridge fits in the chamber that the fatter bullets often shoot better than the skinnier .308 or .309 ones.  I'll have to experiment and see.  I shoot primarily my own cast bullets anyway, so I can always size them to whatever I determine works the best.  A dummy .32 H&R with a .314 135 grain bullet I had lying around from working up a load for my Single Six dropped right in the chamber.

As for the rest, I already have two additional barrels on layaway, a 10" .22 Hornet and a 14" .30-30 Winchester.  Once those are paid off I "need" .32-20, .41 Magnum, and .44 Magnum barrels too.

Dang!  I wish someone would "give" me a fine old Contender with two barrels and a scope for $350.00.  Someone must have woke up this morning and said "I feel like getting ripped off today, so I'll call Landric!"  What a great deal!

Welcome to the club.

I got bit a little over a year ago.  I now have 3 frames and 8 barrels.  It's amazing what I still need.  I used to laugh at guys that "needed" the .410 for "snakes".  I used to think that that was just a silly excuse.  Now I am darned if my entire property isn't awash in snakes, big ones too, and dangerous.  I need a .410. ;D

The sooner you get this silly "need" idea out of your head, the better.  Us ol' time true Contenderaddicts gave up trying to justify "need" log ago.  You go out and get a new barrel because you "want" it 8).

Dang!  I thought I got a great deal on a 'Tender frame.  Now it's just a good deal.  $180 shipped + $30 transfer fee = $210 total.  Then came the grips an the barrels and the scopes.  Still don't have the 410, yet.

Congrats on a very good deal. 1986 puts the frame as an "easy open" an both barrels are excellent choices for caliber.

Oh No!  You now have the fever.  Now you will have to stop buying all those cast boolits group buys.

I never looked at it for the children's sake.  Wait, my children are 29 and 33.  Maybe they should be doing it for my sake since I can't move as quick.  Yes, that's it...
