t c repairs?
« on: December 19, 2003, 07:40:02 AM »
I have a 10 inch 30-30 barrel that I purchased used, online.  It shoots well and I am happy with it's performance on deer.  The problem is I can't get the 92a mounting base to stay tight without grinding off the screws.  it appears TC didn't drill the holes deep enough.  In addition, I can't get one of the stud screws out. Should I send it back to TC or have the fix done by a local gunsmith.  What is their record and turn-around time?

Having to grind the ends off the mounting crews is actually a good thing. It means your getting rid of the part of the screw that doesn't actually help hold it in place and you don't have any extra space between the end of the screw and the bottom of the screw hole. As long as you don't have to grind off 2 threads to make it work that's the way I like it. If I was going to do anything, I'd have it turned into a 6 screw base, although the 3030 probably doesn't need it, it couldn't hurt. I'd guess there is a maximum depth that the screw holes can be cut before they can effect safety, so before I'd have a local guy make them deeper, I'd grind the screws off.

Not sure what you mean by "stud screw"

If what you mean by stud screw is the little headless filler screws then any competent gunsmith should be able to extract them without much trouble.  It   normally involves drilling a small hole in the screw and using a screw extractor to remove it.  This is basic gunsmith stuff.

I always use red Loc-tite liberally on T/C scope mounts. As well as the screw threads I put a real good film between the mount and barrel then wipe off excess.
Don't know just how much this helps, but I've never had a scope mount come lose.
