223 handi rifle issues
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:16:14 PM »
Just received a 223 HnR rifle. Love the gun until this weekend. Here are my issues. keep in mind that I have run about 10+/- rounds through it.

I shot the rifle twice. Went to shoot it again and the firing pin hit the primer and indented it but the round did not fire. It did this with four rounds straight.

Also, when it did fire the first two times, I had to slam my hand on the barrel to open it. What u think is the issue and is it worth fixing knowing that a new gun is under $320?

The first 5-7 rounds that I put through it I had no issues at all. Need a little help of u can. Thanks

my first look would be at the firing pin, opening that hard for me usually had pin stuck forward in "fire" position and good chance that the pin is bent. open action, unloaded of course, and use small screwdriver to push pin forward from hammer side. does it move easily and project thru breech face approx. 040, and then when released does it retract immediately back inside completely? bent pin or gummy pin/bore if it doesn't work easy both ways. have straightened pins a time or two, but it's a challenge. surest fix would be to replace pin, just make sure to get right diameter. problem could be elsewhere but pin is where i would look first. regards, jather...

Welcome!! If it's new, I'd contact H&R and make arrangements to send it in for repair on their dime, ask for a return shipping label.

It's not new. I received the gun on a trade deal. I'll take a look at the firing pin tonight. Anyone know how much a new pin cost? I plan on bringing it somewheres to fix just didn't wanna spend alot fixing an in-expensive gun. Thanks for the help.

If your handi (pun intended ;) ) read thru the trigger job posts in the faqs to educate yourself to the inner workings and make up a slave pin from a piece of drill stock and take the action apart, check everything out. ( You need the pin for re assembly ) Everythings gotta come out to get the firing pin anyhow. Then roll the pin to see if bent or maybe just burrs  in its bore.

BTW, The factory will still fix for you. It's just going to be on your dime.

Good luck,

Even if it not brand new, but only a couple of years old, H&R has always (before Remington) been willing to fix defective guns in the past. You might try calling customer service and asking them about it. Since it might become a safety issue they may be willing to fix it for free. You may have to pay your own shipping but they may/should cover the repair.....<><....:)

banchee,

FWIW, usually if you have fired a round and the barrel is hard to or will not open, cock the gun and squeeze the trigger a second time.  This can free up the pin and make opening the gun easier or possible.

Also, where you shooting factory or handloaded ammo?  You might have too much headspace if it is handloaded ammo and the shoulder is too low.  If it was russian ammo the primers on that stuff or the coating on the steel case can also cause problems.
