Pleasently surprised
« on: February 13, 2011, 06:55:08 AM »
Well, I brought the new Handi out to the range today. What a surprise!
I fired the first 3 rounds at a 12" shoot-n-see at 100. No hits...WTH?!!   I backed off to 25 and sighted thru the bore and the scope. The scope was waaaayyyy off to the right and high, so i adjusted the scope.  Fired 3 more at 100 and Im centered but low, like 16-18" low.
I had the range officer bring up the scope while I watched the cross hairs and fired 3 more..DEAD ON, YES!
I let it cool a while and shot my 10/22 at 100 for an hour or so then went back to the Handi again.  Pulled 3 shots and the farthest out from the 1" bullseye was approx 3/8" away.  Not bad for a lightweight deer rifle and my old eyes!

A couple questions:
This Handi is the Wally world special with the scope, who makes the scope? I cant find a manufacturer or any marks on it.  i dont care for it much and may just put a 4-12 on it later and use that one on my air-rifle.I also noticed the eye relief was really close and it kissed my face lightly a couple times.
The trigger feels gritty, but the pull isnt bad at all. I will leave the pull alone as my wife and/or son may be shooting it later. i would like to take it all down and clean it up to get rid of the gritty feeling. Is there a guide or write up for it somewhere?

Thanks for all the info thats available here on the forums, Dave

There is a good disassembly FAQ posted at the top of the page.  Sounds like you have a shooter on your hands. :D

Dave,
What caliber is it? Sounds like it worked out well in the end.

Pull the buttstock off, you find the butt-bolt hole and several voids in the rear of the socket. You can get the nozzle of a spray cleaner (one compatable with the plastic trigger guard!!)in there and actually see the trigger sear/notch engagement. With the muzzle down, spray a little right on it while holding the hammer back and pulling the trigger (to open up a gap), then let the hammer down and give it another shot. Level the action up and cock it, get the nozzle down in the front and give it a blast, then let it sit and drain/dry on some rags for a bit. Clean anything off the latch/shelf area right after and later to just to make sure nothing floats on out there.
Reassemble and see how it is; this should get any 'grit' out without dissassembly (old gunsmith trick 'o the trade).

Sounds like a goodun'.  A word about the scope.  If you have a break barrel air gun, you will destroy it in the first couple of shots.  The recoil is opposite a cartridge gun....been there, done that.

That trigger will wear in some....

When you get time, come down to Ga. and show me how to shoot them little bitty groups! :D

The other big issue on scopes for airguns is the parallax (sp?) for up close. The typical firearm scope is set for much farther out than most airguns are shot at. It can drive you to ......well, distraction trying to get one to group (ask how I know).
After getting an airgun scope it was a world of difference.
Now why would they package a scope with an airgun with that problem? (Beeman .177/.22 swap barrel c/w 4X scope) I figured just 'Pacific rim' shoddy, but then tried it on a .22LR and at 20yds on it works fine.
