Fitting new barrel
« on: January 27, 2011, 05:26:45 PM »
I read the FAQ's but still have questions!  Just picked up a new 223 barrel from a member here on the board.  Obtained a frame from a different member about a month ago.  The barrel will not close and if I understand correctly I need to sand or file the recess in the underlug.  Was thinking of using a wooden dowel and sandpaper.  Does this should feasible?  The barrel is brand new so will I need to file the breach flat?  One would think the factory did that!  On the underlug do I simply file a little and try it then repeat until it locks up?

Thanks,

Michael

Drop a cartridge into the chamber to check how flush it is with the breech; it should be only a few thousandths below flush. If you do any filing on the breech it would affect that. Set a small square around the breech swell and see how it looks across that breech; even or lopsided, etc. Hold it out and look at it; the human eye can detect more than we often give it credit for. Set it up in the frame and close it up as far as t will go. Does it look straight and square and even, just doesnt close up far enough?
Do not remove any metal unless you know it is without a doubt the thing to do.
If it passes the above inspections you are ready to proceed to step 2.

Thanks for the advise and clarification.  Since I posted my original post I have actually started fitting the barrel and have it shooting.  However I still have some more work to do this coming weekend to get it right.

Glad it is working out (however you get there). The procedure is not as complicated as maybe intimidating, but the right checks and procedure need to be followed. I cant help but think,"it cant be too bad, they have people do it at the factory, and Im a 'people". That has got me into trouble more than once ;D.
