beefed up the new to me traps
« on: January 30, 2011, 08:02:11 PM »
i got some of those i think taos 4 coil springs drilled the northwoods 1 3/4 fox traps put the springs on the factory pins put the spring clips on fit nice not comming off got 6 done tonight get the rest of them done soon boy these old northwoods traps are nice i like them more than the victor # 2s not sure if there any better but they just feel like a better trap even if they are a bit smaller i like the fact that the pan where it attaches is thicker the whole trap is heavy duty compared to the sj victors ill be trapping mostly coon and fox with a few yotes i hope the yote tracks are there think im going to sand blast these traps and put a good coat on them they are not rusted bad but figure why not i did a few of the victors and they came out nice ill get them all done before the season starts gave my buddy 4 of the victors he thinks he wants to start next season also was thinking of selling him some of the victors and getting more of the NW 1 3/4s

bog do you think the NW 1 3/4 are just as good as the victor #2s  for fox and a yote ????

Northwoods are definitely better built traps than the older SJ victor #2's. The 1 3/4 will hold coyotes, but if you can find them I'd go with the northwoods #2's. A little more jaw spread that will get a good above the pad catch. Northwoods, bridger, montgomery and montana #2 traps are all excellent traps that will hold up to the abuse coyotes can dish out. I laminated the jaws, add base plates, 4 coil and add welded link chain with at least 2 in-line swivels. I'm starting to lean more towards super stakes for anchoring my traps with chain instead of cable, but you can also use a double stake set up with good results.

i did find 2 # 2s NW so far they are real nice  hard to find at good price but i think im going to look for more soon as i get the extra swivels for the ones i got already they all have 1 swivel on end but ordering some of those mb crunch proof inline swivels and some #6 rivets going to replace the rivet on the trap and put one swivel in the middle of the chain was thinking about 4 inch then swivel then 4 inch then end swivel should make the chains about 11ish  inches is that to long or should i be ok with that much chain i have been reading i see some guys say 6 inches some say 10 im looking at the chain and seems if i shorten up the links the swivel is real close to trap i dont know this is my first rodeo :D  so im asking all the ?s as i go so what do you guys recomend for chain legnth before swivel and after before end swivel

I like the Northwoods #1 3/4 over the old square jawed Vic #2 any day. I have to check in my shed-think I have a half dozen I have never used, may have set a couple of them in mo.--lol sometimes I forget.

Your chain length is fine, but I would go with a double stake swivel instead of the single. Once yyou see how a coyote fights the trap you'll understand what I mean. Coyotes have a way of finding any weakness in a trap and explioting that weakness until they break the trap or pull out.  We,ve got 26 coyotes this year in both snares and foothold traps and everyone of them went out fighting.
