309 JDJ
« on: January 05, 2011, 12:41:59 PM »
I am thinking that I need a 309 jdj carbine (17"-18") for my contender.  I am not sure I have ever seen one for sale.  I think most people just want to keep them.  Use will be for PA deer and black bear.  We grow some pretty big black bear in this state and some of the shots in the mountains can get in the 200-300 yard range.  Any suggestions?  Should I just try and get a 30-30 carbine barrel to send to SSK?  Any ideas where a used one may be sold?  I have not seen any for sale on these classified postings.

In all my ramblin's, I've come across exactly one used 309JDJ for sale and it was a pistol barrel.  It hasn't been out of my sight since and it's not leaving in the near future.  Should make one heck of a carbine though.  I shoot both 309 and 30-30AI in a Contender pistol format and there really isn't any(much) difference until you go above 150gr bullets, but at that point the 309 really walks away to a class of it's own.  I've often thought of rechambering a 308 Encore rifle barrel to 309. but I'm a little afraid of having two levels(Contender and Encore) of 309 ammo laying around(old man gets confused easy) ::).

Hornady used to make 375 JDJ for T/C but discontinued it a few years back.  Who else makes it?  I'm out and haven't started reloading for it yet.

Thanks,
Curtis

Many years ago I sent a brand new 30-30 Carbine barrel to JD and had him rechamber it to 309 JDJ. I shot it for a while and then had T/C put a Muzzle Tamer on it. That thing shot fantastic, one of those 'wish I hadn't sold it things'. It ran right up there with the 308 Win. Worse mistake was to have a 10 inch 30-30 converted to 309. You will like the 309 in the Carbine.

Send a 30-30 into J.D.  It is a great round!  I have a 358 and 309 JDJ.  I love both of them but hunt almost exclusively with the 3n09.  Better velocities and expansion.  Greater damage.  I think at the velocities they go at the smaller bullet is a little softer and thus a little more damaging.  JMHO.
