In checking accuracy, I had a metal table back home that has a fairly good size vise on it and the vise has the oblong opening in the low throat. If one was to take any gun out and wrapped it well with cloth, insulation etc. would shooting out of a vise like that, would it really reflect the accurarcy of a firearm. Not talking about shooting a round as soon as one can rechamber a cartridge and fire it.? Just wondering.

Don't know how accurate it would be but one thing's for sure, it won't hit the same point of aim as when you shoot it from the shoulder. At a police range that I used to frequent, the range officer made a test jig using motorcycle shock absorbers, a carpeted metal frame, and some velcro to hold the gun in position. Quite an abortion but it worked very well with rifles up to 30-'06. Same theory as a Ransom Rest for pistols. Very repeatable and it simulated the body flex of a person.

I don't think it would be a good test of accuracy either. In wrapping it with most anything that pads it from the vise you induce a looseness that will allow it to move during recoil and it isn't going to return to the same spot each time.

If you want to know how well that rifle shoots get you a good set of solid rest bags and a good quality scope. Sit down at the bench and make sure each shot you are holding the rifle the same and that the bags are holding it rock steady.

I don't want to drill/tap and scope both guns to find out the best shooter. I cannot use the sights that are on most of the mil-surp rifles, Savage and Ruger I have no trouble with. That is why I suggest the vise. It will be held tighter than the shock absorbers and sandbags though.
