6-284
« on: February 05, 2011, 12:22:04 PM »
I picked up an other 6-284 today at the Lima gun show. As near as I can tell is has a 10 twist so I won`t be able to shoot the heavy bullets I want to shoot, but I have pleanty of brass I guess I`ll have acouple of 600 yrd. guns now instead of 1,000 yrd. guns. Still should poke holes in some coyotes and groundhogs. I`ve still got to get an 8 twist barrel in 6-284 though.

Catfish,  Did you buy a whole gun or just a barrel?  I had a 98 Mauser with a custom stock and many other modifications that I sold about 4 years ago, just wondering if you might have picked it up ?  Its probably still around our area NW Ohio ?  It was a good shooter but required neck turning the brass because of the tight chamber so I traded it.        Jed

Not your old gun. It`s on a Savage action. I wanted to shoot it today, but I have it in my back and am not going to get it done. I loaded some 95 Bergers and some 100 gr Sierra bullets to try. I`m going to try some 80`s or 85`s too, and see what shoots best. Even with the lite bullets I figure it should be a good 600 to 700 yrd. coyote gun.

Well, I`ve shot it and not what I was hopeing for. It does shoot real well with the 70 gr. Sierra match bullets, but just won`t handle the 105 ggr. bullets I want to use. Guess it will still make a good 600 yrd. gun for coyotes though.

:D  Catfish, where do you do most of your coyote hunting...?? as I remember you are living in Ohio..I didn't realize you would have that much long range shooting in that area..since rifles are a no, no for deer, I thought the same would apply to coyotes..If they are legal for coyotes, it is pretty silly not to allow them for deer ??? What do you say???

Yes, I live in Oh, and we can use centerfire rifles on about everything but deer. The problem with deer is that we have so many hunters in such a small area that centerfire rifles just shoot to far. I live on a farm, and have alot of relatives and friends that also own farm that I can hunt where I can set up and watch acrossed the fields, some places I can see a mile and several out past 1,000 yrds. We just have to pick our back stops for the bullets closer than you guy do. I don`t kill many coyotes, I just spend alot of time out where it quite.
