Shorty question
« on: December 19, 2010, 08:14:21 AM »
I have been bit hard by this bug... Thanks guys!!!

The question is on a 357 shorty cutting the barrel back, how much does the ballance of the gun change?
Is it harder or easier to open, or about the same?

I am planning on putting a weaver 1.5 - 5 scope on it. Not worried about velocity loss and yes it will become a max down the road.

The question is on a 357 shorty cutting the barrel back, how much does the ballance of the gun change? I depends on how short you cut it.
Is it harder or easier to open, or about the same? I haven't noticed any difference with my shorties.

My 16.5 inch Maxi and 18 inch .38-55 are both on BC Carbine stocks.  They are sweet to handle and open readily.....you'll like it ;D ;D

+1. I agree. My maxi and pseudo shorty the 454 (20"). Opens and functions normally.

The only thing I will warn is at 16 " barrel be sure your OAL meets minimums as well. That is another regulation many overlook. IIRC it's 27" OAL, generally only a consideration with a pistol grip. But with the configuration of a handi action. If one used a short youth stock he would get close.

Of coarse the 16" min for a rifled barrel and 18" for smooth bore most everyone knows. Most like to hedge this by adding a half inch lnger.
Merry Christmas

Yes, I forgot the overall gun length. I will be going for the legal limit. 16 inch barrel and minimum stock.
Thanks for keeping me out of jail. I am much to young and good looking for that.

Good thought CW.  My 16.5 inch Maxi on the BC Carbine stock measures 31 inches OAL.....Nice and legal.  That little rifle, and the 18 inch .38-55 are so perfect, it is difficult to describe.  The .38-55 is 33 inches OAL.  They are 'Handi", swing quickly, balance well and shoot accurately....very accurately.  I've got a nice day this morning, and I'm going out to work both of them out a bit.

Shu, If I were you I would go with a barrel length that with a youth stock installed the rifle would be the min. OAL, +that 1/2-1" safety extra in case you ever need to recrown, etc. By factoring for the youth stock rather than the adult size (and there is a difference between those with plain buttplate vs recoil pad), you, or the next owner, will have the option in the future and still be legal.

A barrel is measured by dropping a cleaning rod down the muzzle til it stops, marking and measuring it. Useful for those 45-120 shorties. There was a 45-70 Contender pistol pictured somewhere that had under an inch of rifled barrel.

agreed, It's OAL barrel length. From breech face to end of muzzle. Cartridge dimensions or crown makes no difference. Wouldn't matter if crown was recessed 15 7/8"!!!

EDIT for agreement and spelling ;)

I checked the legal length here in "anti every thing good or reasonable land" (California) is 16 inch barrel and 26 inches over all length.

So with youth stocks and shorty 16 inch barrel, still good to go.

Jail regardless of state would be bad.

you guys got my curiousity to thinking  ??? ( not always a good thing) ??? ..  If I have a Handi shorty, with a 16.5" barrel and I want to change my stock from pallet wood standard to synth Handi grip,  at the moment I remove the PW stock,   the overall length is less than 26"......
Am I in violation of state and federal laws then????   If so then I would need to remove the barrel before changing the stock?????
Jeez this makes my head spin... :-\

No, you're still good because the firearm isn't in a fireable condition.
