Thumbhole stocks
« on: December 20, 2010, 01:26:28 AM »
Thinking of getting one for my .243 ultra. It currently has a standard monte carlo wood stock and was wondering what everyones thoughts are on them. Also I see the price listed on H&R website does that include the forend also?

No, the price is for the stock only, no forend or stock bolt, it does come with a recoil pad, forends come with the spacer, screw and bolt need to be ordered separately, see the FAQs for part numbers, or just ask when you call.

I bought one and haven't even put it on a Handi. After I got it I realized that it's strictly a right hand affair. No left hand operation available.

If you are talking about the Handi Grip - just get from Midway.  You get everything - don't have to buy stuff separately.

The Handi-grip shown on the accessory page of their website doesn't have a price and does come with the forend and hardware, so I'm pretty sure he means the laminated t-holes on the accessory barrel page which does have a price listed as he mentioned. The laminate t-hole is made by Boyd's, I'm pretty sure the forends are made by H&R in their new Ilion wood production facility, the Handi-grip is made by Choate, thus the reason why it comes complete.  ;)

Deerhunter#1,

I have a Lam. TH Stock on a 30 cal wildcat with a muzzle brake and it is a great stock for bench or bipod shooting.  I think the TH stock would also work fine hunting from a blind.  For me, the TH stock wouldn't work well for offhand shooting in the field as I like the ability to shoot left or right handed while hunting.

I have a couple different "thumbhole" stocks. I very much like the looks and feel.

There are three different thumbholes available for these rifles.  I have all three, with the Gunstocks model, as well as the laminated factory set, I find they are not to friendly for fast in cold weather hunting applications. Getting to the hammer is harder and slower as you need to completely remove your hand from the grip OR cock it with the off hand. I don't find it a problem at the range or varmint hunting, in the warmer months.

I sold off my Gunstocks models and keep the two factory thumbholes on varmint and rimfire rifles.
The new syn handi grip set has a much larger hole and is also ambidextrious. It's pretty easy to access the hammer and has a equilly great feel. Much like a AR style but far safer and with a far better cheek rest. ;)

Hands down the looks great and feel wonderful. The down fall IMHO is simply hammer minuplation in colder weather or under stress or under speedy time frames that I see them as not as good as what you now have.

Merry Christmas,
