Q for Tim about your 38-55 Shorty please.
« on: December 17, 2010, 12:13:09 PM »
Did you notice much increase in the report from full length to short?

I ask because I have a Franken Marlin 38-55 that I'm thinking about turning into a Shorty.  I've heard the stories about the sharp 30-30 report in a shorty, and I'm curious.

Thanks.

Huh, what wuz that, I didn't quite catch that, could you repeat the question!!  ::) I've never shot the 28" without hearing protection, while I haven't shot the shorty much without hearing protection, I did a couple times while out hunting, it doesn't seem to be any worse than my 22" 30-30AI and 35 Rem barreled Handis, that's the only other comparison I can really make, it didn't leave my ears ringing or anything like that if you're concerned.

The 38-55 is a lo pressure caliber, and as such should be even quieter than a handgun cambering when made into a shorty. (255gr at 12-1300fps)

BUT the way Tim loads his,  ::) its going to be as loud if not louder than any short 30-30, as he just confirmed.  ;)

A good example is the 30 Carbine. many of us have fired one from a carbine, its nothing special or extraordinary. Now load that puppy into a short hand gun barrel like my Blackhawk and WHOA!! This baby BARKS with authority!!!

Thanks to Tim, I have the same 18 inch barrel on BC Carbine stock set.  Like Tim, I've shot it with and without hearing protection, with Tim's load, and really don't think it barks all that bad.  It is a fun little rifle to shoot.

That's kinda what I was thinking, but wanted to be sure.  I figured that them screamers that you're loading Tim would be loud.  My Marlin has a barrel marked "For Black Powder" on it, so I won't be loading anything like that for it.

Now I do have an NEF 38-55 barrel on it's way, that could be a litte different story.

Thanks gents.
