Tang vernier sight on BC
« on: December 17, 2010, 12:04:52 PM »
I just picked up a BC 45-70.  I would like to shoot BPCR with it but the factory peep sight is not allowed in many competitions.
Have any of you Handi experts fitted a vernier tang sight on you BC?  If so which one did you select and why?  How
about the front sight?  Did you change that out as well?

Thanks.  I really want to hear about which vernier sight was chosen, cost, long range, mid range, etc.  The FAQ are great but first hand discussions
are better.

I am not trying to annnoy anyone on this forum.  I just wanted to know which brand, model etc is actually being used and well they work on the BC.
I read the sticky's and FAQ's and wanted a little more information.

Like so much in life what you spend will get you a cheap one or a good one. If you are going for fun and all a cheap one will work about as well as many of the old original period tang sights. If you are going to get into serious competion with a lot of elev/windage adjustments and need to take notes on the setting and have repeatability rather than frustration you will have to pay more. It is a shock to find out a sight will cost as much, or more, than your rifle!
So, which end of the scale are you thinkin' of being and we can give you some meaningful thoughts for consideration.

You are right about the cost factor.  I just looked on the Buffalo Arms web site and saw that most start at $345 and go up from there.
They used to carry some vernier sights that were quite good made in or around Serbia for a little over $200.  I was hoping I could start
with those.  Of course I bought them about 8 years ago.....silly me.
I am thinking that it is always better to buy the long range Soule type sights as they are a little more versitile than the mid range.
I have looked for them on Gun Broker, GBO and other  places used and they just flat don't ever appear.

If you are not really going to shoot 1000yd that long staff is kinda in the way; looks purposeful though. The midrange staffs will get you about 600yd. as I understand it.
For casual and occassional use the new Marbles tang sights are a pretty nice piece of work c/w windage and they make a deluxe one with some different length staff heights for the H&R (see the Buffalo Arms catalog).
The Lee Shaver 'economy' version is the Italian sight staff on his Soule base, not a bad one at all.
Maybe try Parts Unknown for a websight on the Ukranian made ones.
The Single Shot Exchange magazine and the ASSRA (American Single Shot Assoc.) site may be helpful too.
