White tailed deer with a Bisley in 45 Colt
« on: December 05, 2003, 11:32:54 AM »
I took a large doe with the Ruger this week, it was my first with a cast bullet and first with this new 45. I loaded a 300 grain Lyman bullet cast of wheelweights to about 1100 fps. The shot was an easy one, the kind to take with a revolver, and took the deer from the front, high in the neck. The deer fell where it stood. The bullet turned up under the skin on a back leg, gas check missing and a small dent where it hit the spine. The thing that impressed me was that after cutting up 3 deer shot with rifles, 250-3000 and 7x57, with this one it was just like Elmer said. You could eat right up to the bullet hole. The gun is a little more accurate with a Hornady 300 grain jhp, but this cast bullet seems to be more than enough. Are any of you hunting with cast bullets and if so do you use a harder alloy? I'll be using a cast 320gr. out of my .454 Casull this year at around 1300-1400 fps, according to the book, with a 7.5 barrel on a revolver it's supposed to go 1275, but I'm shooting a closed-breech 12" Encore, so I think I should be getting a bit more than the 1275.  I shot a turkey with it earlier this fall at a friend's farm place, shot it at the body-neck junction with a 255 cast at about 900-1000 fps, just a round hole, no meat damage, I didn't even cut it out when we cooked it!  I think I'll like the cast, I've shot all my other deer with bows or a .30-06 or .308 or .243, and they don't mess up a lot, but I hope this does less.

I use a 295 gr cast bullet (GC) with a medium nose, in my bisley 45.  Also have a 330 gr. LBT  LFN  (GC) that I use.  I've used these bullets on quite a few deer, antleope, and bears. I've come to the conculsion that there all I need for hunting

I use wheel weights and water drop them. They seem be about right for me.

I took my first deer with a Ruger SRH 44 magnum with a 300 grain LBT
WFN GC bullet on top of 20 grains of W296. The shot was at 50 steps from a ladder stand-deer was facing me shot hit top of hips- past through the deer and left a hole larger than a golf ball. Earlier this year ,I shot two deer with a down loaded 375 H&H magnum
at 1300 ft/sec 260 grain lyman cast bullet #375449. It took several shots to drop the deer. This was no small task since I was shooting a Ruger #1.
The 44 magnum with the LBT 300 grain wfnGC bullet was a heck of a lot more effective than the 375 magnum at 1300 feet per/sec.
I am going after a South Carolina wild boar next week.

my favorite alloy for hunting bullets is ww and lynotype mixed 5050 Its plenty hard enough to break bone without deforming and its ductable enough that it doesnt fracture.

I use a Lee 255 grain bullet, cast of wheelweghts for my pistol.  Never had one fail on 5 deer and nine or so hogs.  No  lost meat except for the hole drilled through the vitals.
