Model 81 Information please
« on: December 05, 2003, 05:47:46 PM »
I just picked up a 95% model 81 in .300 Sav.; it has a Stith side/barrel "Streamlined" mount, with a 2 3/4 Kollmorgen with fine cross-hairs and dot, very nice wood, factory checkering, perfect blueing, and a Lyman tang sight.  One of O'Connor's books mention that the 81's were take-downs.  I don't see evidence of takedown; anybody know anything about this?  I understand that these came in different grades- anybody know how to tell these apart?  Fjestad's book says that the date code is 7/49.

Since no one else answered.
If you remove the forend wood you will find a lever that is actually the handle for the the takedown bolt.  It has been years since I had mine apart but I would recomend at least checking the takedown bolt for tightness.  They will shoot loose, they will fire, but won't shoot accurately.  Mine went from about 6" at 50 yards to about 1" just by tightening.
somewhere betwixt a baulk and a breakdown
