Tactical Rifle Shooting

:D
Some of the shooters at a local range are getting involved in Tactical Rifle shooting matches. We only have 300 meters, and none of the guys have gone to a 1000 yard match yet. Have any of you shooters our there tried one of the brand rifles, such as Savage and Remington? It seems Savage has struck a winning chord with its new AccuTrigger. Are these rifles the best bang for the buck? Do they deliver at the 1000 yards these matches are fired at? Thanks to any who have tried this and can offer some information.

A friend jsut got the Savage in 308 and loves it. He does the 1000 yard stuff. I don't think he's taken it to a shoot yet but did take a couple of nice deer so far. I'll ask next time I see him. I'm sure it's fun or he wouldn't spend the time.

There is an article in the latest "Rifle Shooter" magazine on this very issue.  It is worth a look see.  The author used a Remington 700 VLS and a Springfield Armory 6-20x scope.  He put 3 rounds into a group size of 5 3/4" at 1000 yards with this setup.

I use a Remington 700 PSS (called the Police model) in 308 WIN.  It is similar to the civilian models, such as the 700 VS and VLS except the Police version is a bit more refined for tactical shooting.  I have been told that the actions are "trued up" and they use tighter tollerances.  It also has a parkerized finish in matte black with a heavy barrel.  The stock is a bit better than the civilian versions as well with a broader forestock and a nice palm swell.  This thing was a tack driver right out of the box.  It will shoot five rounds at 100 yards into .4 MOA outside edge to outside edge, using 150's.  I haven't yet shot it beyond 300 meters but I hope to soon.  This was with a standard Leupold VX3 4-14x scope by the way.  I am still working on getting a tactical scope for it soon.  The Police version is available through gun shops and costs about $200 more than the civilian model.  I think they are worth the extra cost.  If you are serious about long range shooting, spend lots on the scope.

As for Savage, I have looked at them but I can't buy one...to my eye, they are butt ugly and I have to like what I am shooting.  Furthermore, I don't like the stock configuration on any Savage I have held but this is a subjective issue.  To each his own.
